Hi there folks! I'm newly diagnosed with Crohn's and have had IBS all my life. I'm currently on a Prednisone taper (at 20mg) today. The prednisone seems to work great to stop diarrhea and bleeding, but now I'm constipated with constant bloating sensation. My doctor said that my Crohns is in my distal illeum and small intestine, but that my IBS is in my "lazy colon." He recommended Metamucil, which I was taking successfuly for the IBS prior to the Crohns dx. but it is not working well enough. I added colace for a couple of days which still did not help much. So last night I took two Senokot...I successfully had a major bowel movement, but I felt so awful all day with cramping, fatigue and return of mucous, that I couldn't even go to work. Any suggestions would be welcome. I don't understand why the Prednisone, which is supposed to bring down swelling, would cause constipation. I've been not eating much, but trying to stick to a low fiber diet. I added cranberry juice and a pear, in an effort to help. Thanks in advance for any ideas!!!

How much metamucil are you taking? It could be you need to adjust it accordingly, I know with my crohns and IBS using Prodiem (similar to metamucil) has been very helpful and I've been taking it faithfully everyday for the last 4 yrs now.

Drinking lots of water is very important for 2 reasons, we as IBDers tend to get dehydrated (especially where D is concerned) and it's vital to drink plenty of water with fibre supplements.

I love metamucil and would be a mess without it. glycolax, too. I have C and bloating most of the time, but it is due to adhesions.
take care of yourself and welcome. I am also 48. and the docs said I am too old to have this diagnosis!
48 y/o woman.  Diagnosed 4/06 after colonscopy, SBFT, CT-scan all showed crohns. 3 months later, after pred and remicade, all tests showed no crohns. In December had adhesions cut through a laparoscopy. Now just taking Glycolax, metamucil, and began Humira 9/07.

yogaprof :)

Why on earth would the docs say you're too old to have this DX? IBD and even IBS can happen at any age, it's more common in a selected age group but that doesn't mean it won't happen at any age...my mom was 65 when she got sick with UC.

Hi I am on the pred. too and have just gotten over a bout with constipation. I started eating some apple sauce, banana and apple juice. So I finally got things moving the natural way and sure glad I started to get things moving again. Not eating much probably slows the system down, although I was eating good, hopefully now you have had a good clean out things will get better for you. I also was having loads of gurgling to,I even eat canned beans in molasses which seems to help. Now I have not so much gurgling and can pass air better. Hope you get things working better. lol gail

What is glycolax? Is it over the counter? The whole fiber vs. no fiber thing is so confusing. Actually everything about management of this disease is difficult!
