Now being newely digansd. with crohns it is impossible for me to eat fruits and veggis and im not even in a flare. I tried just little bits but send me to the toliet in 1-2 hours.  I get loose stools or diaherra when i do.  I work out because dont want weight gain with all the steriods but like i cant eat a well balanced diet.  I have tried the drinks, blending things, etc.. but still get loose stools.  Wish i could just eat a salad instead of an ensure drink!! HOw do you guys deal with this??  Im on a high protein and low-fat to fat free diet but just wondering if im the only one this happens too?  But being on these steriods, pentasa, humaria best i have felt yet and cant help myself from  stuffing cookies and all kinds of junk in my mouth just because i havent had diaherra. Hmmm, they say you can add a little fiber supplement, such as benefiber to help with the steroid munchies.
I've yet to try it cause I'm still trying to adjust my prednisone/humira dosage and I don't want to confuse dosage results with the fiber bulking the stools. If you choose to do this it has been recommended to add the fiber SLOWLY to your diet. I feel your pain....I so miss fresh veggies & fruit! Also, try a banana smoothie made with non fat yogurt. Beef it up with vanilla flavoring (non alcoholic) and see it you can tolerate that.
The yogurt or a good probiotic might help you tolerate some fruits/veggies. Don't forget to peel & remove seeds from everything! Then again...there are days I'm fine and can tolerate certain foods and the next day they don't like me!? Trial & Error for everyone I guess.

I too am longing for the day of fresh fruits and esp veggies. Oh to have fresh cucumbers, broccoli, fresh carrots....went by Souper!Salad today. Oh the daydreams of what I could eat...
Been on Pred since Feb. Tapered down to 1 mg, but just getting worse. Doc now has me on 30 mg this week. So doing the high protein thing. Especially with fresh fish (Japanese anyone). okay, may have defeated myself a bit with the nori, but oh Lordy did it taste good.
I know there are days when even oatmeal cooked very well hurts. But usually beans (pinto) cooked for a very long time in a slow cooker and chicken and veggies in slow roaster.
Even baby food can be tolerated (but doesn't taste that great...key add salt)if you're in the mood for veggies. (Hint: go for the baby's first foods if having real trouble...been mashed down to nothing, but key vitamins are still there). Just if on steroids, make sure you get your calcium...
By the way, still looking myself for things to give me constipation (or at least slow it down to 2 or 3 x a day)....anybody?

god i so know what you mean. I would kill for creamy cheesey brocclli soup from panara.  You know cheese always constipates me like cheese off a pizza.  If i do have pizza i can only have corners with no cheese.  Have you tried that?  I drink the calcium enriched lactose free love milk.  I also switched to soy choc milk love that too.  Yeah i usually make a fruit smoothie with one bananna, 1/2 cup peaches and strawberry fat free probotic yougurt and still makes me go.  I just cant belive that fruit and just a bananna and peaches like one time a day crazy.  Yeah i dont need no fiber have no problem in that department with being on all this medication i still go 5-6 times a day?? Is that normal?

are you eating the fruits and veggies raw or have you tried cooked? did you have diarrhea when you ate this stuff before you were diagnosed since you are not in a flare now?

I drink V8, take multi vitamins and eat canned fruits and cooked veggies although I used to eat salads and fresh stuff ALOT before I got sick. Num Num gorgonzola and pear salad..... or southwest salad with corn.... or celery and pb <sigh>

I also eat a digestive enzyme before each meal and it helps with the gas and bloating. With time I have been able to eat fresh bananas, blueberries, melons fresh but still not the veggies but still in small amts.

I agree with the person that said to do slowly on the fiber. OMG I went from a low fiber diet when I was diagnosed and tried to eat steamed zucchini and about died but I was also in a flare. so I went backward a bit and then started integrating back slow and taking metamucil and eating oatmeal and seem to be ok.

Can't give you tips to help you to slow down the D because I'm one of the Crohnies that have C more than D.

for the burning nawing hunger when I was on pred I took prilosec and since it knocked out the acidy feeling I didn't eat like I normally do. (I usually have asthma attacks in the spring so I normally throw down and eat everything in my site to try to get rid of that hunger)

I only eat like canned peaches/pears, baked potatos. I have had diaherra for 7 years. Dr. told me had ibs so i just ate whatever if i got sick i dealt with it you know. Finally in 06 i switched insurance got a different dr who diagnosed me with it now. So i really dont know I stick to a bland diet all the time even when im not in a flare just because im scared it is better than trying and getting sick for a few days setting me off into something that last months. I drink fruit drinks that are all natural and stuff and that send me right into the bathroom. I even blended banannas and peaches and still loose stools. I will try just like 1/2 of something and see.

Wish i could drink V8, tried kinda gross. I should keep up on my multivitamin, b complex, mag & potassium but i forget sometimes. so many other pills to take.
