1 or 2 glasses of wine & prednisone can I ??? Do you ?? Just for today??

Hey.. I just started 60mg Prednisone on thursday, today I am having a housefull of friends & family. I have all my favortie wine ready to go.. Can I have a glass or 2, surely no more than 2 if I would.. ? What do you guys think ?

I have heard both before... I personally did have some alochol while on the Pred but I know some warn not to do it.

I would take it very easy if you decide to. Like one glass and plenty of water etc...

See what others say here, I am definately no expert but I felt like I was going to enjoy a glass of wine if I wanted to.

I dont know for sure but I thought you had asked simuliar question on a/p forum about this while taking benzo's and /or antidepressants??

IMHO....drinking is not good with any of the afore mentioned meds but thats my opinion

I did ion the pass but i would keep intake very low lots water as suggested one time i had like 5 drinks and got quite ill lots vomiting but that was it and i think i was on like 40 Mg at the time.

I had 1 bottle of beer and 1 glas of wine. While on pred. I got so much burning pain in my stomac and had the D of the Year. The day after we were eating out. I had 1 beer. And the bigger D of the year.

Haven't done that anymore. :/

Hi.. and thanks.. After your feedback I decided to have just a half a glass of my favorite wine.. which was wonderful.. and totally had me satisfied sipping on that.. .. truthfully.. I agree Lyn nothing is worth compromising any progress in tx.. This is something that is hard for me, I am sure not for all but It does stink when things that had been no big deal before suddenly become a huge deal.. ... uggh..

I never heard that you shouldn't drink specifically while on pred. There is a warning on a lot of medicine from the pharm re: drinking alcohol though. Does it cause a specific reaction?. I have 1 or 2 vodka and tonic almost every evening. I do know that alcohol with crohn's can cause increased D etc. I have avoided red wine as much as possible because of that.

It is more the PG and antidepressants as well as any pain meds you may be taking ............alcohol and these meds do not work together

Prednisone is not the best to mix with it as well IMHO

My ativan and valium as well as pred do have labels on them about alcohol ........I am in Ontario

Pred and alcy don't mix well.  As well, taking anxiety meds and alc an make you really tired as others have said (I made that mistake once).

Male DX with CD May 2006 @ age 22, Colonoscopy and SBT

Although many of my meds have extra warning labels on them specifically about avoiding alcohol, the only one on my pred bottles says to take with food or milk. I just read through all the info available for medical professionals at drugs.com and cannot find any reference or warning about consuming alcohol while taking pred. What i can see is that pred is metabolized by the liver. My own knowledge tells me that heavy drinking could possibly put the liver at risk for damage. However, I can't find one reason to avoid the occasional "social" drink while using prednisone.

Now, you've mentioned other meds as well. Those may have some interaction with alcohol that should be investigated. I know that most anti-depressants carry warnings about mixing the two.

I take many meds. Among them are Cymbalta, Oxycontin, Neurontin and Zanaflex. I suppose that technically, I should drink alcohol at all. However, I do occasinally have a drink or two. I also realize that when I do so, I am putting myself at risk. What it boils down to is that I have researched what I should and should not drink with and calculated the risks to myself. This is a decision that only I can make for myself even though I know I probably should avoid alcohol. We each need to assess the risks and decide for ourselves.

This is my first (and hopefully only) encounter with this potent pyschoactive drug. I had an unexplained allergic reaction, started to swell in the throat. So I went to the ER and was giving a steroid injection in my butt cheek. Hurt like holy hell. Then was given a 40mg a day prescription of prednisone for 5 days. Today is day two of insantiy!

I'm 20 years old and have been on antidepressants for a few years, not for any bi-polar tendencies, just typical depression. I was totally caught off guard with no warning about the side effects of prednisone. A few hours later, this all happening while I was alone, I became suicidally depressed, weeping for no reason, wanting to die and hurt myself. Then I swung into a manic, paranoid, wired and confused state I haven't encountered for years. I definitely liken the experience to amphetamine psychosis. Minor visual hallucinations (blue flashing lights and motions unexplained), and talking and whining to myself, madness! Shakiness and twitching ensued. My jaw became tight and I chewed and gurned my teeth.

I thought it was a great idea to jump in the car at 2.00am to buy some hair dye, as I was apparently delusional and out of touch with reality. Drove around lost and confused for 45mins in circles. It was like having a psychotic breakdown! I looked like I was twicking on meth. I could have seriously injured myself or another, as I was a danger on the road. Got home (eventually) and cried some more. Then swung back to manic, dyed my hair and cut it and put on make up at 3am. Insomnia. Aches and pains my body hurt like I was having withdrawls. My eyes couldn't focus and my brain was in a stupor. It brought back my dermatillomania (I was scratching and itching my face til it bled). Then I was angry, irritable and irrational at my mother and my poor cat through no fault of their own.

The next day I started to research, and found this blog. The experience was very scary and frightening. I can deal with the acne, hunger, pains and all physical symptoms, but the psychological and emotional rollercoaster I couldn't handle alone. I told my mother and now she is helping me through my medically induced insanity. If I'd known earlier the effects of prednisone I would have at least asked to be watched for such disturbances.

Beth - I'm sorry to hear about your problem but to my knowledge you usually don't experience such extreme side effects from a fairly low dose of prednisone after only being on it for a couple of days. Maybe there is something else going on like you have a sensitivity to the pred. I would go to your doctor and get it checked out.

Prednisone has been known to cause or increase psychological disturbances in some patients.
40 mg. is not a low dose, it is definitely a moderate dose.

I think you should contact your doctor and pharmacist and discuss your experience.
