what does an peri-anal abscess look like?  (the kind on the skin).  I have a fistula with a seton that's giving me pain but now there's a pink to reddish colored bump next to the fistula opening.  It hurts bad down there, and when my friend pushed on it, a clear colored fluid was on her finger (she used a glove).  I called the after-hours service and the on call doc said prob. is an abscess or another fistula.  I don't see my doc until thursday and he only told me to call back if i get a fever (which i did have a low grade one on friday morning but it went away and hasn't come back) also on friday morning had blood coming from that area and that's when the bump was noticed but no bleeding since.  From my previous fistula's there was a bump before they opened but no fluid came out and this bump looks different so not sure that's the problem.  I'm pretty worried cuz i thought if you had an abscess that it needed to be taken care of pronto.  Also i wonder why it would be right next to the current fistula and not father away.  Bottom line i'm not sure if it's an abscess or not, the bump is small and i'm debating on whether to go to er or wait til thursday and i just want to know what i should do.  If someone could help me it would be appreciated.  Sorry for the long post.

don't think they can do much for it at the ER...take lots of bathes and show your GI doc next visit. If the pain gets bad, ask for a script.....don't make yourself suffer more than you have to, but also know there is not always a lot that can be done for that part of this illness.

It is hard to tell if it is an abscess or a fistula. The thing with an abscess is that you don't want a deep one breaking inside of you. Since you can see this bump, and if it does break open, it is going to drain out, so you won't have the infection going inside of you.....that is a good thing. I would definitely get it looked at, but not at the er if you can help it. They will just want to slice it open and drain it themselves....I am speaking from experience here. Don't let them do it....it will just come back. Like Glad Bag said, take your pain meds if you have some, if not, call tomorrow and get a script for one, or if it gets too bad, go to the er for meds. You can't really go by the low grade fever thing....I have never gotten fevers with mine. It would be so much easier for all of us, if each problem would present itself as a classic txtbook case, but as you know that doesn't happen! If it is an abscess, make sure you have it surgically drained. Good luck! Keep us posted.

thanx for the replies, i'm still not sure if it's an abscess or not. the bump is so small and it leaked clear fluid when pressed, which i'm not sure if that normal for an abscess.  i have this dread that i will go into the er and spend hours there for them to tell me there is nothing wrong.  i don't have any pain meds and i've been popping tylenol alot but of course it does nothing.  also i've had tailbone/lower back pain on top of the butt pain and i might just go to the er to get some relief for the pain if nothing else.
