Do you tell your dentist you have CD?

I have an apt tonight and I am not sure if there is anything that he needs to know?

So do you tell yours? I don’t know if my Imuran or other meds  could cause a problem…..

Thanks !!!

Karen

I let them know what meds I'm on. Each time I go in, even for a cleaning, they ask me if my meds have changed. If you're on immunosuppressants, they want to know.

I also tell my dentist that I do have Crohn's disease, and what meds I am on at the time. I have a notecard that I keep in my purse that I update with current medications, dosages, and when I have to take them, as well as allergies & known conditions. It's much easier to just hand doctor's the index card instead of trying to remember everything. My Mom always uses her card, and it has come in handy in emergency situations.

I tell my dentist because dentists like to prescribe antibiotics and/or tell you to take ibuprofen, either of which can cause problems for Crohns.

I hope your dentist is gentle!!!   Good luck!

I know that it's important to tell them.  I was on Prednisone over a year ago, and they wanted a certain amount of time to go by once I was off of it before they'd clean my teeth.  I also had wanted them to know about my mouth sores to confirm that they were from my cd, not from a lack of oral care.  I love my dental office they are very caring, they always ask how my "guts" are doing. Make sure that you make them aware of what prescriptions you are on for sure.

Take care!

I always keep my dentist updated on my meds and disease status (as well as my optometrist). Since we have extra intestinal manifestations, it is good to have them looking to catch a problem early. Also, medications for inflammation or antibiotics can affect your dental care. Immuno suppressants may make getting a gum infection easier, etc. I have also found that cleanings can be painful if I am in a full flare even though I do not have mouth issues...so it is good for them to know these things.
As it turns out, my dentist has a daughter with CD and I hope that I can help him too with information and support!

You have to tell your dentist, there's no reason why he shouldn't know, it's part of your health afterall and when you get bad mouth ulcers the dentist can better understand what's going on, not to mention having to get out of the chair at a moments notice to use the can.

PB4- my thoughts exactly. I always tell my dentist not because of my meds but so he will get out of my way if I say I need a break!!!
26 Year old married female.  Diagnosed w/ CD 3 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD.  Currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day, hysociamine prn, nexium, and ortho evra.  Good times!!!

In the distant past, no. After what happened a few years ago, I definitely tell them. Last major work on my mouth, my gums & lips swelled & cracked. Overnight. It was AWFUL. I'll try to prevent another recurrence. I believe it had something to do with the novacaine injections & my screwy immune system. Also, as said above, if you're on immunosuppresants, they need to know.

thanks everyone! I guess I should have realized I should tell them!! I told my eye Dr and she was so glad I did cause she knew all kinds of CD related issues with the eyes.

I will tell the Dentist and make him a copy of my medical alert card, it has all my meds listed.

thanks again!

I don't know what I would do without all of you!

Hey Fitzy...it's nt just the rushing to the potty I had to warn my dentisit. I had to tell him "I don't do impressions". We laughed picturing me doing John Wayne. I have the worst gag reflex and found myself choking on the first two attempts to mold my crown. He had to change the mold stuff and use a faster drying stuff. Boy the look on his face when I started to go white and choke---it's good to know he can move fast if I have to push for the potty too :-)

HabsHockeyFan, that was funny!

I was at my dentist once and said wait I have to sneeze. I said "sorry I did not want to sneeze on you" and he said "don't worry I have had way worse stuff in my face before".

I had to chuckle cause I never thought of that. I bet dentists have to have strong stomachs!

With all of the drugs we are on, you kind of have to tell your dentist. I have had really bad rare reactions to dental work, my gastro told me these weird bumps that broke out and hurt on my bump are just another crohn's symptom.  My dentist was worried and put off doing the rest of my mouth until they subsided. It was all in all a horrid experience, and crohns does make our teeth worse, as well as all of the immune suppresants and steriods.  Please tell them every med you are on!

I told them. He said his Brother in law has CD. Did not seem to worried about the meds I am on.

I did have a filling filled and my mouth is sore where the novocaine went in. My face even hurt last night. I hope the injection site is not going to take forever to heal.

thanks

I told my Dentist and he hardly knew what CD was, I had to explained to him as he asked questions, and why it happens and it was annoying kinda.

I told him the meds I was on and he never heard of them (I went this week btw). He cleaned my teeth, polished, all went well. I came back the next day later for cavity filling, he gave me novacaine needle and I was ok after, and it's been 2 days later so I guess i'm all good. I guess my immune system isn't too bad yet as i've only been on Imuran for a week.  Also, where he put needle is healed already, and it only hurt for a few hours after.

thenay, thanks for the info. My dentist did not seem to care but this is the first time the injection site hurt for me so much. Also it still hurts and it happened last night. It is my first filling on Imuran. I sure hope I have no problems.

thanks for your input! I think some dentists know more than others :)

I've been avoiding going to the dentist because I am in the middle of a Prednisone taper, but I Know I have three fillings that were supposed to be taken care of by summer, and here I am in November, still trying to get off Prednisone and out of a flare! I was going to ask my GI, but it sounts like others of you have had fillings while on Prednisone. What do your GIs say about it?

"What do your GIs say about it?"

My G.I. reminds me that my immune system may be compromised, healing may take longer...

I have not had any problems with fillings, teeth pulled, crowns.

I also had 7 surgeries last month to remove lipomas throughout my body.
(non cancerous fatty tissue growths, similiar to cysts, just under the skin)

I had 2-3 done in one setting, no more, using a local.(wide awake)
Had one in my forehead which was tricky to remove.

No infection problems, scars are healing up well.

Now if my White Cell Count was really low, then I would not have taken the chance.

I tell my dentist and talk to him about it because he also has crohn's disease. It is actually a nice conversation piece!!! I almost feel closer to him because we both know how each other feels and when they call me and tell me that he is sick and have to cancel I totally understand. I was talking to his old receptionist in another office one day and asked her if she misses her job at the dentist office and she said she misses it but does not miss calling people all the time and telling him he is sick and i told her that i have the same thing as he does and I used to really like her but she just acted like it is no big deal.

I always tell. They need to know we can't have NSAIDS, the meds you are on and if your are immuno suppressed.
