I swear it is always something LOL. So my doctor started me on 6 MP on Tuesday...The persecription was placed on Tuesday at 11:00 am Sent directly to the pharmacy.
It's now Thursday and the Pharmacy is telling me that they are having a difficult time getting the med from the manufactuer! I dont understand what he means by that. He says its a very special drug and is not easy to get...Has anyone had such an experience...It concerns me because of the refills will I have to wait days to maybe a week for my refill to come in?
2nd question I noticed that a lot of your GI's started you out at 50mg a day...My GI is starting me out at 50mg 3x a day! That is 150mg a day!!! wow wow buddy explanation anyone?

The dose of 6-MP is based on your weight, so you can't really compare your dose to anyone else's. But 150 mg per day does not sound like an unusually high dose for a man. As far as the supply issues, I don't really know. It's not a particularly uncommon drug, but maybe the manufacturer is having temporary production problems. Hope they get things sorted out soon.

Is it made by the same people that make Rowasa for UC? There was a post on the UC board about Rite Aid not being able to get Rowasa in. The UC people contacted the manufacturer directly and they made sure it got to the patient's pharmacy asap. Id read the UC post and then contact hte manufacturer.

i get 480 pentasa at a time and once my pharmacy didn't have enough. interesting on the dosing, i weigh 110lbs, i am only going on 25mgs for now, then possibly an increase after blood work.

doc - have you read about people dealing with nausea/vertigo from the 6mp? you might want to consider taking it right before bed. that is what i fully intend to do :)

Doc2007, how much do you weigh?  6MP dosing is typically about 1.5mg/kg of body weight.
That works out to about 0.7 times your weight.
If you weight 220, then 150mg of 6MP is about right.  If you weigh significantly less than 220, then I would question the dosage prescribed.

Yes I only weigh 143 right now...my normal weight is 150...so that is substantial less than 220.
Not to worried about Nasuia and Vertigo...The only side effects I have ever really experienced from meds is once like 10 years ago I threw up Flagyl because I took it on an empty stomach...and Prednisone gives me mood swings...speaking of which I just went off "to" one of my coworkers about a snotty client! I mean litteraly out of nowhere Im like a Army general!!! LOL

I should mention that my doc just wants to start me off at 150 mg but drop it I guess after he sees how my body metabolizes the drug...

I am happy you found your 6mp, I never had a problem getting it from CVS. Must just have been that pharmacy. I started on 50 and was moved up to 75mg. I do suggest taking it at night time, the first week it made me loopy but I adjusted to it. Best of luck!! Hope it works for you!

Hey Doc,

I'm in San Diego also, and have never had a problem getting 6MP. I've actually had them order it from 3 different manufacturers, and I always tell them I prefer to stick with one manufacturer (I believe it's Roxanne). I've had some drug hypersensitivity issues. I use Long's Drugs, and have never had a problem.

I've been on 150mg. before, but not for long. I think I stayed on 75 mg. when I was ill, but now I'm on maintenance and on 50 mg. It depends on your weight and your tolerance. My liver enzymes were better on the lower doses.

Doc, maybe the pharmacy you first went to has tired carrier pigeons . You know how big companies try to cut cost..
