I just saw my gi today, and he's referring me to see a new surgeon.  He's suggesting that i try the plug or fiberin glue surgery for my fistula.  Has anyone had either of these?  I see the surgeon on wednesday and i want to be prepared for the options.  Does either of these hurt afterwards and for how long is recovery.  Also what is the success you've had with them working and no fistula coming back thanks.

ps my history is below and i've been battling this fistula thing forever and it stinks

i was checked out for a few years ago to see if i was a candidate for it but my fistula was not complete and thus they said they couldnt do it for me. all i remember was that it was one of the most painful procedures ever. since it was quite a few years ago, my memory is kinda hazy on it but if it is working correctly then it is a procedure that is still fairly new and they have varied success with it.

tried the fibrin glue twice back in '00. did not work for me as my fistula was under too much pressure and too wet. blew the plugs out like a squeezed tooth paste tube!

It did NOT work for me. As soon as the plug incorporated and the fistula closed, I got another abscess and another fistula popped up in another spot. Now I have 2 fistulas.
It was the most painful experience I have had. And I've had 24 abcesses! The healing time was really long and I keep panicking about doing something that would make the plug fall out. Like going to the bathroom.
Just because it did not work for me doesn't mean it won't work for you.

Best of luck!

36 year old female. Dx'd and undx'd a few times. Was just redx'd again 04/2007.
History of rectal abscesses and fistulas (28 surgeries including abscess I & D, exploratory surgeries, 2 C-ton drains and 1 fistula plug) Count does not include self bursting abscesses.
1st Remicade infusion 6/5/07.  Lots of joint pain, and a new fistula since the 2nd infusion 6/19.
Praying I'll get better soon so we can have a baby.

no pain for mine. never felt it. as a matter of fact , I shoved the tube for the glue into my fistula myself as i was familiar with where it curved and such. the dr said , go ahead,

I had glue "plug" put in enterovaginal fistula, no pain as it was done under a general. No pain after. It didn't work for me but has been successful for other people I know. Make sure the person doing the procedure has had lots of experience. - worth a try before surgery! Hope that helps. Louise x
