I know there are a bunch of 6mp threads but I have also noticed a lot of women who either have ovarian cysts or fertility issues or menstrual issues and have read a few people wonder if it is connected.

My dr told me I had an ovarian cyst when I was a teenager, he said it would eventually "reabsorb", and eventually I didn't have any more problems.  I am currently not getting my period (i posted before, I don't know why) and I have noticed when I ask my GI dr (I have asked my last dr all these questions) they don't seem to know.  I had cervical dysplasia (pre-precancerous cells removed) years ago.

When I was sick last year I went to my reg doctor and my dermatologist and gynecologist (all for what at the time seemed like unrelated symptoms) and they all had no idea.  I told them all I had ulcerative colitis that was acting up (which is what the diagnosis was at the time) but had all kinds of other crazy things going on (ulcers in my throat, unexplained red raised bruise on my calf, eye infection, tooth abcess for which they put me on antibiotics which sped everything right up, etc and kept hearing from the different drs either "I don't know" or "you just have what's going around, def a bug, everyone is sick right now")

I switched family drs and my new dr is so great, she was the one who looked at some of my symptoms and said it might be Crohn's, and when I finally got in to see my GI dr he admitted me to the hospital right away.  But it makes me think that a lot of drs just don't know about Crohn's and even the GI drs have a lot to learn (and research in general, etc).  Probably the best resource is hearing other people's personal experiences, so I am particularly interested how many women are on 6mp and if this effects their reproductive system.  To throw another bit into the mix I was reading that 6mp has the potantial to be cancer causing in humans, and my dr has said that Crohn's disease also increases your risk.

Any thoughts or experiences?  I don't want to completely scare myself but like to be well informed about what the worst case scenario is for the medicine i am taking is, especially for fertility.

There have been a few studies regarding the relationship between IBD and GYN problems including fertility. Unfortunately, the issues for women have not been studied and addressed as well as we would haven liked. While I have no personal experiences to relate, I thought you might find this of interest.

I was on 6mp for 5 years, went off 3 mths before pregnancy, and got pregnant on the first try. From what I understand, it can increase rates of miscarriage or cause problems with fertility while on it, but it's half life is gone within three mths. There are also several people that had successful pregnancies while on it with no complications to the fetus, although if you can get off it, it is better as birth defects have not been ruled out. Hope that helps. I thought that the only time fertility can be affected with crohns is during an active flare or with an ostomy. I have had no problems, and have three friends with the illness who also had no problems with getting pregnant.

Emmy, do you take anything now?  How can you figure out if you can go off 6mp?  I was on it before and stopped taking it and after 6 months got sick again.  Is there any alternative to taking the medicine, did you adjust your diet or start taking something else?

Thanks for the input!

I am off it now, as I am going to start to try to get pregnant again. I am taking a low dose of prednisone (10 mg) now to maintain remission. I just got off about 6 mths ago. My stomach is still touchy, but hope it will get better. The doctors always say that being on no medication in a flare is worse than most of the meds themselves-so discuss it with your doctor. Prednisone has always worked for me in the past, the hard part is getting off it once I start. We shall see. I will start trying in about 2 mths when I feel stable.
