I just visted my GI yesterday and discussed a side affect that I assumed was from one of my meds which my GI said was actually panic attacks. I was a little floored to be honest.

Here's what happens...I'll be minding my own business and all of a sudden I will feel strange (fingers will tingle, have trouble breathing (like someone is sitting on my chest) and I always have fear that "something is really wrong"). I can usually bring myself down from this just remembering that I am not having a heart attack or weird drug interaction and then I will be OK after about 5 or 10 minutes. This happens abour 2 or 3 times a week. My GI prescribed lorazepam/Ativan at a low dose (1 MG per day) to try to prevent these from happening.

I am not sure what is causing this. Could it be prednisone tapering? (I'm tapering down 2.5 mg per week and am at low doses now - only 7.5 per day) Could it be actully be an axiety disorder?

I am very hesitant to add yet another drug to my growing list of meds. Has anyone else experienced this? I am hoping that it is prednisone related and that once I taper off (hopefully for good) that it will go away as well. I was treated temporarily for depression about 12 years ago when my my was diagnosed and later died from cancer but have never have had any anxiety issues or need for further anti-depression meds until now.

Hi, I have recently gone onto yet another immune supressant, its similar affects, I get all sweaty, palputations, tingling fingers, tight chest (first time it happened I thought it was a heart attack) I also have weird rashes. I am now off steriods and on methaltrexiat and aziothiaprine , not really sure what it is, but the doctor assures me its not my heart.... hope you feel better soon. AD

HI
I have not yet been to the GI, i have an appt a week from today. But i get anxiety attacks frequently, esp after/during a bad flare up. I feel really scared that i'm going to die, or i'm thinking bad thoughts about why i'm so sick, etc, that i work myself up into a panic. I used to be on xanax for unrelated anxiety in the past, and i'm going to ask the GI for some more when i go next week.

It actually sounds kind of ridiculous when I type it out but is it ever a scary feeling when it is happening. I guess I'll just wait and see over the next few weeks if things get better once I am totally off of the prednisone. It's only happening a few times a week so I will probably skip the Ativan for now. From what I've read on it, I don't think that I want to be sedated all of the time but I'll get the script filled just in case.

Thanks as always for the encouraging words.

I had the same thing happen when I was on Pred.  I didn't want another drug to take either but when I took the Ativan it was like a miracle worker and no other side effects, just some peace.... don't be afraid...this too shall pass

it is definitely from the pred. be careful because the ativan can be addictive, but it is a great help in the short term. good luck

my friend uses ativan for short term panic attacks and she dose not appear all sedated at all. She is fully functional. Especially at a low dose, you should be fine.

It's happening to me and I'm tapering prednisone, I was given Ativan 1mg as well, take it when needed for anxiety.

Prednisone is a horrible drug, I'm now on aziothiaprine (Imuran) and that's it for CD (i'll be off the pred in early Jan if all goes well)

And yes Ativan can be addictive, I usually try not to take it more than 3 days in a row and break for a day or two if I can.

Taking Prednisone 17.5mg (tapering), Imuran 75mg (eventually 150mg I was told), Atenolol 25mg for fast heartbeat (thanks Pred!)

How long after you got off the Prednisone did this stop? I've read it stays in your system a while even after you have tapered. It's good to hear that at low doses you don't feel like you are sedated and also reassuring that it will subside in a month or so when I'm off this junk. Maybe it will also help with mood swings. It's a terrible thing and I'm sure my husband would like to see that side affect go away :)

It took me about a month to stop feeling the effects of pred. You can take 1/2 mg of ativan also. Just cut it in half. That was enough to take the edge off me. I didn't take it every day either. Didn't want to risk addiction.

I asked the GI today what causes the anxiety and he confirmed that it was the Pred.

There is light at the end of the tunnel. :-)

Well I am not on Pred but still have the anxiety occasionally especially when I am not feeling well. I get stressed that I am going to get sicker, miss work etc. When these times hit I usually take 1/2 of a 5 mg Valium and some nausea med (cause I always get nauseous at these times) and that usually does the trick for me.

I have had Crohns for over 32 years, but the last five or so have been a little more difficult for me, and this anxiety has really amped it up for me. But my little med cocktail seems to help calms things down. Good luck!

Thanks, you guys have really made me feel better. I guess I am still in adjustment mode from taking the occasional aspirin to have a such a varied "cocktail" of drugs everyday. I'll rack it up to another change in life with Crohn's :)

I had panic attacks exactly like you describe the whole time I was on prednisone. They didn't stop until I was off of it completely.
