Greetings Ladies,

Just a quick question. Does anybody else not get their period? It's been about 3 years since I've had mine. Well, I took birth control for a few months and got it, but stopped taking them on account of mood swings.  I am just wondering if anyone else's has stopped.  Mine didn't stop until I got sick and diagnosed.   It's never come back and my weight is normal, I think.

Mine has never stopped throughout everything else going on. If anything it got worse! It lasted 8 - 10 days, intense cramping for 3 days, mood swings that were just horrible and hot flashes - at 21 years old! - Since then I've been on birth control (Yasmin - almost 4 years) and my periods have been much better. It lasts about 5 days now, much less pain, and much less moody.

You should probably talk with your OBGYN and find out what's going on.. maybe try other birth control. There are so many options there's bound to be one that suits your needs!

Thank you for the response.  I have been to the GYN but they can't seem to figure it out.  I just wondered if anyone else experienced.  I had one doctor tell me they may never know. Thanks again!

I stopped getting my period last time I got sick and thought it might be a) losing weight quickly b) crazy trauma from being in the hospital c) prednisone d) some other misc cause I am not realizing.

I asked 3 drs (my Ob/Gyn, my GI dr and my primary care dr) - they all said they didn't know and I should wait to see if it would regulate itself.  I went back on the pill (which I had stopped right before I got sick b/c I had horrible D and was throwing up at that point so the pill wasn't even being absorbed I am sure).  When I got better I went back on the Pill and finally got my period, but it had been about 3-4 months.

I had a flare up again and AGAIN am not getting my period.  I do not want to go back on the pill b/c at this point I want to see what is going on with my body and menstrual cycle but the drs seem to have a "wait and see" attitude.

On an interesting side note, I started researching the Pill and Crohn's and there seems to be a connection in developing the disease - I know they don't know what causes it but some factors seem to definitely trigger it (i.e. smoking).  There is no proven clear link but I think it is worth mentioning since so many women are on/have been on the Pill:

I haven't had a true period in...well jeez, almost a year now. I've had my annual gyn. exam w/Pap, came back normal, my gyn. wasn't too concerned over the lack of period. My PC doctor isn't bothered as long as my gyn.'s ok with it. And my GI chalks it up to either the meds, low body weight, anemia, etc. Currently I'm in remission (with my fingers crossed!), but still haven't gotten one. I've got some other issues going on right now (see other post re. fistula- yuk!!!). I've gained weight, have been taking iron so the anemia is pretty much gone, am tapering the pred ok, but still no period. I don't mind. My theory is that my body isn't healthy enough to support another life, it can barely handle my own! therefore, no period = no baby! I've never been on the pill, as I do smoke. I have one child, & my GI troubles started after her birth.   PS- I do use birth control, condoms... don't want you all to think I'm some sort of "rhythm method" wacko... nono   hahahaa!

diagnosed with UC '02
meds-
Asacol- 8 tabs/day
Remicade infusions
Imuran- 100mgs/day
Prednisone- 15mgs/day

Thank you so much everyone for your posts.  The doctors told me the same thing, they just don't know.  I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one out there like that.

Thank you all.

For the cramping ladies, my girlfriend has IBS, and we got her on premcal, she used to get nasty cramping for a few days (the kind that makes a girl take a day off of work), but annoying cramping for a week...then after we got her on premcal

she now has a day of light cramping, and that's it! She now has a lifetime subscription to premcal.

Hello,
I was reading all your responses about having your period and this disease. Has anyone had this happen..I had mine for my normal two days then it stopped. Now, it just started again in full force. Could it be the medication? I take Asacol, flagyl, 7.5 mg of Prednisone, nexium and 6mp. I do not take birth control.
Any thoughts?
one more thing, during the PMS stage are your Crohn's symptoms more intense?
thanks for your help.

Well BitBit, it's my girlfriend that has the period (denoted by the "gf" in my last post) who has IBS, I have Crohn's...but you are on a male hormone (prednisone), so it's likely it's screwing with your period.  It's also likely that you may grow hair in unwanted places.  You're on a lot of medications...wonder why the flagyl..have you read about MAP (Mycobacterium Avium subspecies Paratuberculosis) and it's role in Crohn's?

I got my period today!  In case anyone was wondering.  I still don't know why I didn't get it for 3 months, I am still on prednisone and still the same weight.  Maybe just the disruption of it all.  I am glad I didn't have to go back on the pill to get it again. :)  I wanted to see what was happening naturally.  Bad cramps and extraordinarily irritable, yes definitely back!! :)
