If you have crohns in your rectum what symptoms might you be experiencing??/ More diarrhea?  Some constipation like symptoms?  I am having many rectal spasms... like the dry heaves of the butt.  you know..when you feel like you have to throw up and can't and  just have the heaves. well this is what I have down below.  I am NOT constipated but go alittle ALL day long, like 10 times.  Sometimes nithing comes out.. just have that feeling. HArd to leave the house.  Also.. soemtimes, I don't feel I have gone. NOT Pleasant!  Could this mean the CD has spread to my rectum?  Am using a cream( analpram) but am wondering if this is just adding to the sensations?   Prof

Good morning,

I only have CD in the rectum.  I got an abcess and fistula but no other symptoms. If it weren't for the abcess, I wouldn't have known I had anything.   I'm on Remicade now, and my colo-rectal surgeon says the lesion in the rectum has healed ( I have a seton through the fistula... will fix that later).  CD can attack the tissue of the rectum very deeply.  I'm wondering if this may be what you are experiencing.

There aren't many of us who have CD only in the rectum.  I'd be interested in hearing about your experience with CD.

Hope your symptoms clear up very soon!

I've often had proctitis (inflammation of the rectom), the major symptom of this is the feeling of incomplete evacuation (after you're done going, feeling as if you're not finished or have completely released everything there..the feeling of preasure like you still have to go but can't get anything eles out)...

For me that's the most common symptom when dealing with proctitis.

Cortifoam aids proctitis.

My Crohn's is only in the large intestine, but seems to be primarily located in the rectal region. This is why my colorectal surgeon says she'd remove the whole thing with a permanent ileostomy. My symtoms are similar as you say, Prof. I also have a perianal fistula. And, when things are bad, I have a constant pain/ache below the pelvic bone. I used to use the HydroCort enemas, but the last time I used one was when I hemorrhaged so I was always worried they were connected. The other theory was that one of my rectal ulcers went deep enough to hit the hemorrhoidal artery.

Thanks.. I will have to call my GI it seems. On top of this I do Have a rectal prolapse so need to keep my stool soft so I don't push so take a colace. Don't think that would cause any rectal damage..It is NOT like a laxative which causes permanent dmge to your intestines.
And.. today... I am having many tiny accidents when I walk...URG! I hate this disease

mine is mostly in my rectum. I ahve had a boat load of fistulas and setons. THe rectum area was also the reason I got rectal cancer. Please keep up with your tests. If my canacer comes back, I will lose my rectum :(

I was just diagnosed with CD 3 weeks ago and the worst pain i'm having is in the rectum.  There is a severe ulceration there but the ct scans reveal that there is no fistule.  Does that mean that I'll be okay?  Does this come back alot?  Am currently on prednisone and cipro, and am the dr wants me to start on Humira. Any comments or advice?

Hello lilgeniexol,

As I understand it, a fistula follows an abcess which forms when there is a tear in the rectum or an infected rectal gland. Hopefully you caught it in time and the drugs will work and get your body to stop damaging itself. If the drugs work well, you won't get an abcess or fistula -- and maybe, just maybe this will be all the CD problems you will ever have! Keep a positive attitude!! This is what my docs said to me when they put me on remicade (all I have is rectal CD). According to my colo-rectal surgeon, my ulcer was superficial -- but I still got an abcess and fistula. The ulceration healed after 3 remicade treatments. Have you had any other tests besides a CT scan?

God i know exactly what you are talking about. I have proctitis of my rectum as well. The creams, protofoam, baths, even the wet wipes dont really help. The constant itchy, burning, raw, just uncomfortable feeling. You can actually feel the spasms down there. The constant feeling of having to go and then cant i think makes it hurt even worse. It doenst even have to be diaherra just the fact that it is building up there and then when you go the amount of it makes it burn and hurt even worse.

I don't know if my problem is related to crohn's in my rectum but I been having stool with blood stain and sometimes mucus with bright blood mixed in it.  my GI doctor says I might have CD in my rectum area.  I been bleeding for almost 2 months now.

Trsora1 :)

The burning itching you're describing is likely related to fissures...hot epsom salt sitz baths help (frequent ones) and rubbing extra virgine olive oil after each bath (and showering) eases and helps heal quickly.

It can take a while for cortifoam to kick in when dealing with proctitis.

Hi, I supposedly have Ulcerative proctitis, but my rectal ulcer was fistulating.  I know what you mean about that spasm feeling, I get it often, I hate it!  My doctor told me it's called Tenesmus.  I have had this same rectal ulcer for at least four years. My G.I. thought it would be easy to "fix" with rectal meds at first.  The only thing that has worked is Remicade, which closed the fistula but the ulcer is still there.  The only thing I have found to help the outer rectal pain in Lidocaine Viscous 2%, it is weird to use cause it's a syrup, but it is the only thing that doesn't burn like mad and helps!  I would love to talk to all of you whom are going through the same things and share ideas/experiences/advice.  Sorry you all are going through it, I know how painful and hard it is!

This is taken from this website: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003131.htm

Definition

Tenesmus is the constant feeling of the need to empty the bowel, accompanied by pain, cramping, and involuntary straining efforts.

Considerations

Tenesmus is generally associated with inflammatory diseases of the bowel, which may be caused by an infection or by other conditions. Tenesmus is characterized by a sensation of needing to pass stool, accompanied by pain, cramping, and straining. Despite straining, little stool is passed.

Causes

Diagnosed with Left-sided Ulcerative Colitis 1995 at 15
Tried: Prednisone, Rowasa & Hydrocortisone Enemas, Proctofoam, Sulfasalazine, Asacol, Probiotics, Fish Oil, Canasa, Enotcourt, Colazol, Proctocort, Anamantle...
Diagnosed with Ulcerative Proctitis with rectal fistula in 2004, put on Remicade
2007: Increased Remicade dosage to 660mg every 6 weeks, diagnosed with Psoriatic Arthritis and Fibromyalgia
Current meds: Remicade 660mgs every 6 wks, Lomotil, Tramadol, Darvocet, Clorazepate, new meds I am about to start: Prograf, Cymbalta, Lyrica

For the past three years this is how my crohns has been.  I was in denial for quite sometime and didn't want to talk to anyone about it.  Finally it got so bad when I had my colonoscopy my doctor couldn't believe how bad it was and that I was still functioning.  Since then, about a year ago, I have been on Imuran, Pentasa, Humira and cortisone suppositories.  I am finally starting to get some relief but if I skip the suppositories just one night I start to regress.  I started the Humira in April and I initially saw a great improvement but it has tapered since.  I also found cutting out sugary foods and drinking a lot of water has helped.  If anyone else has any suggestions I am open to them.

Personally I like the cortifoam (steroid based foam enema) much better than suppositories, I find it goes up a little higher than suppositories do.

crohn's in the rectum sucks. a total pain in the arse! (pun intended).

i never found any real relief from suppositories, enemas, or foams. was on them until i had surgery, so for like 13 years maybe. dont know if they really worked for me. the hydrocortisone creams seem to work though for when you get a stingray. that is the absolute worse cos you cant even walk or sit down.

My Gi has me using Analpram. I think it is also used for hemmroids but it is a steriod like ointment. Sometimes I think it irritates the area.
Either way... it is a pain in the A--!!!!!!

Hi I have Crohns in my rectum as well as other parts of the intestine, the crohns in the rectum presents itself as painful fistulas and sores, and burning when I am passibg diarrhea which is frequently.... it healed partially when I was on the Remicade but unfortunately as I had a rection to that they stopped it, since I have been suffering with it even more, the tissue in this area has become so thin that it rubs and bleeds when I walk any sort of distance these days, but I have had the disease for the last 46years so the GI says that I can expect the tissue to be thin anyway. ad

Proctitis is mainly inflammation in the rectom but of course there can be polyps and even fistulas involved with having CD.
