Hello, everyone!  I haven't posted in a while.  I just had a colonoscopy.  My GI said I have healed quite a bit since the last colo, but I developed a stricture in the "sigmoid colon."  He said surgery isn't needed YET.  I am on Remicade 10mg/kg every 4 weeks. (max dose.)  I am on Imuran 50mg and he is thinking about increasing this.  My question is, can a stricture get better on it's own, or does it just worsen?  Can increasing the Imuran help?  I had a feeling I had a stricture, because sometimes it's hard to have a BM.  They are narrow and skinny, and sometimes hard to pass.  He also recommended taking a small dose of Miralax occasionally to soften the stool more and make it easier to pass.  Sorry for such a long post, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  The thought of surgery terrifies me.  I'll try anything and everything to avoid this!! confused   (I had a bad surgical experience before.)  Thank you!!  Julie

It depends upon whether it is from scar tissue or inflammation. If inflammation then yes, the imuran can help. If from scar tissue, then no it can't reverse the damage. It may however slow down the build up of more scar tissue. They may be able to open up the stricture with a balloon dilatation, sort of like they do with arteries. It's done during a colonoscopy and doesn't require surgery.

Thanks to both of you for the quick replies!  I'll have to ask my GI if it is scar tissue or inflammation.  I have been on Remicade for almost 2 years, along with the Imuran.  The reason my GI started my on a low dose of Imuran was because I had Pancreatitis 7 years ago.  I'm waiting for some bloodwork to come back, then we are going to increase it again.  Julie
