Ok, So I've been on 3-3mg tab of entocort a day for 6 weeks and I took my first 4 shots of Humira a week and a half ago.. For some crazy reason ( I don't know if its medication but my diet has not changed)  I keep getting these horrible charlie horses. The first one was 5 nights ago in my calf. it was so bad I woke up screaming and it was sore all day.. then on sat and sunday my fingers and toes kept cramping and i couldn't move them.  Has anyone else had this happen or should I just eat more bananas??

I was getting them like crazy too while on entocort but when I came off it I had them too, so I wasn't sure, and well I got blood done and my potassium levels were really low, was put on potassium pills for a few months (600mg x 4) and now i'm off them, i'm better for now.. lol.. I try and eat some bananas now and then but they make me sick, it doesn't work right with me, so I drink OJ.  I'd get it checked out just in case ;)

thenay that is so funny you can't tolerate banana's but can drink oj. Most of us can only eat banana's and oj or oranges are big no-no's. Doc I think you probably should get your blood tested, could be the Entocort but also you could have low Potassium. Good luck and keep us posted.

Are you drinking enough liquids (water especially)?
I 've often found that If I don't make a point of drinking plenty of water throughout the day I'll get cramps and just generally feel worse all together.

Try potatos.  They have more potassium than bananas!  And they're generally pretty mild on the stomach.  For immediate relief, put a potassium pill under your tongue and let it disolve.  It will go through the membrane under your tongue and directly into the blood stream.

Thank you all for your responses.  I have tried pickle juice before and bananas and they help long term.. Charlie horses are so weird and they hurt!  I've done ok for the past day and a half. I ate some bananas and made mashed potatoes. Next time I have a bad cramp I'll have to try the potassium under the tounge.  Does drinking enough water really make that much difference? I only drink about 2 bottles a day and then I have my normal apple juice and tea.  maybe ill try drinking a little more. :)

again thank you for your responses.

Excellent article about potassium:

http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=nutrient&dbid=90

I've added "salt substitute" (potassium chloride, or KCl) to my diet. Doesn't taste great though, but I'm making sure I take at least a 1/4 teaspoon per day (a full teaspoon is within limits). However, it should be dissolved in water. Overuse of potassium pills can cause irritation to the stomach and intestine, even ulcers - that's why dissolved in water is better. But short term, a potassium pill should provide relief.
