HI I started my dulcolax (4) at 5:30pm, and my osmoprep pills series at 6:30. I started "going" at 8:45ish. How long do you think I will keep going? It's almost midnight now and i'm still going brown stuff--not clear-- every 7 min or so. It's really liquidy, but no clear yet. Does anyone know how long it will take to clean out?

Also, my instructions say to take 8 more pills in the morning 3.5 hours before my procedure. SO that would be 5:30 because my colonoscopy is at 9am. Will i keep pooing up until i Get there? It takes at least 30 mins to get to the hospital... and I don't have any diapers! What should I do if i have to "Go"? umm... sorry for the TMI. but this is really causing me a bit of worry.

Also, how do they tell if your prep was successful? Before or after they put you through anesthesia?

Thanks a lot to anyone who knows these answers!!!

They would always have me do a fleet enema a few hours before the procedure, just to make sure everything was cleaned out. Are there any stores open around 6 a.m. where you could pick one up? You will know when you're all cleaned out, because the enema will come out clear. They will find out if the prep was successful after the anesthesia.

Good luck, and I hope the procedure goes well!

GL with that prep I do mine tomorrow. My prep is just the 32 osmoprep pills which states to not start taking the pills til 4pm. I called the GI office and since he has only been my GI officially since April he has never kown how long the prerps take to work on me. When it was Visacol tablets that were used I did those when they were still pretty new and took the 40 pills at the time the paper said to and it was late if I recall probably about the same time and it didnt start making me go until 12am. I told them this so the next time I had a scope they had me start much earlier in the day however I had been in a flare so I had been on clears for more than just the day before so it didnt take as long to kick in. Also by that time which was 2004 the pills were not 28 instead of 40 and they were all done the day before none the day of.

I called and informed the med assist I am having general anesthesia for my scope and it concerned me that I would be finishing the prep of the pills just 3 hours before my scheduled scope time. Every time I have had general I am NPO from 12 midnight the day before...also my recent nausea issue if all I have in me is pills and water by a certain time I get extrememly nauseous and may vomit...not a good think while under general anesthesia. It says I can take my morning pills they are all vitamins except the protonix which I will take with the smallest sip of water ever...I cannot do as my husband does with the swallowing a pill with just saliva unless desperate and NPO and I need a benadryl. The only other pill that is not a vitamin that I take 1st thing when I get up if needed is the dilaudid...I already have the 50mcg patch of Fentanyl on me.

I called and left the message with the med assist and she said normally that is what he even has his patients that are having general anesthesia do. I also left the message about it takign a while to kick in so she left a message...I was at a specialty pharmacy buying gauze supplies that you cant just get at any local pharmacy for my fistula. She said I can start the prep earlier in the day just make sure I leave a 12 hour time frame between the 1st dose start time and the 2nd dose start time. My husband leaves for work at 4:30 am so I will begin my prep then...Ill find something to watch for those 5 doses probably snooze a while get up later continue with clears thru the day then at 4:30 pm I will do the remaining prep pills. I called her back today to tell her that was what I was going to do especially after telling her I have not had a BM since Sunday night even the colace with laxative havent helped me to go much lately I think it may be due to the pain meds but I was dealing with C before my surgeries this year and the surgeon removed a total of 1/2 my colon all together to prevent the C in the future. In order for me to go on Sunday in addition to the colace with laxative in it I had to use glycerine suppositories which I went and it was formed but skinny...not really skinny but not as big as they were prior to my surgeries...prolly around 1 inch in diameter or a little less, an hour or 2 later I had to run down to have D....I am so confused...that is what tends to hapen when I have to use the suppository I have either that formed BM or sometimes it kinda of blasts out then a short while later I am running for the bathroom to have D

I'm leaving work shortly to go home and start my prep for my colonoscopy tomorrow morning. The last time I had one, which was 3 and a half years ago, the prep was GoLytely. This time it's the Fleet PhosphoSoda stuff, so I don't know how'll I'll do. I hope it works for me. Good luck with yours, Steph and Dragonfly.

Hey Steph,

With mine I still had the urge to go the next day but nothing was really coming out. Luckily I lived very close to the hospital and my husband who was a cop at the time drove me there in a cruiser so we didn't hit any traffic. However, whenever I had to go to my doctors when I had the runs, (which is farther from me than the hospital), I just plan my route ahead of time with scheduled bathroom stops. Are there gas stations, grocery stores, walmarts, dunkin donuts along your route? Just give yourself mini goals and stop as many times as you need to in order to keep emptying out. Once you get there and they start to put you under, don't worry. If anything starts coming out they have a little suction hose they take care of it with. So embarassing but SO totally normal. You will be ok!

In the past with the Visacol I had the urge to go the following morning but they were false alarms. I did the visicol the 1st time when it was the 40 pills and some were taken the morning of the test. Later they discovered taking 28 visacol all in one day the same way 4 pills every 15 minutes was fine and that the extra 12 visacol were not needed. Maybe some day they will make either really tiny pills for this or just a few huge ones but for me any pills even if it were 100 are better then the drinks. The drinks, goLytely, fleet phosphosoda, even citrate of magnesia all made me vomit. The GI had me mix the citrate with sprite...not I gag when drinking sprite and the only time I have taken a sip of it since was when there was nothing absolutely nothing else to drink and were were not near a sink or water fountain and I only took the smallest sip possible.

I dont know how long it will take these to kick in for me tough to say being that I have had more CD episodes dealing with C rather than D. My old GI had me do the visicol prep back in oct 2006 since a CT supposedly showed I was C however I had been suffereing from D this time around and the first BM I had was the CT contrast drink. It took about 5 hours before I started having a BM could have been longer. I know I started it early in the morning I sent my husband to get his hair cut alone...he still needs directions driving around RI being that he didnt learn to drive in MA he started driving in California. I use lots of back roads so I feared it was going to kick in fast being that I had been having D on and off between uses of Imodium. since I had not been on days of clears prior to the visicol it took hours to go i believe I started the pills that day in October at around 10 or 11 am and I dont recall having a BM until 4pm or 5pm that evening that is why I also am chosing to start my prep in the morning earlier than the paper and the medical assistant after hearing what occured while I was on visacol in the past for the same reason ...I did use it 2 times for scope preps...felt my decision to bump up the time I start the pills is a good idea
