hello everyone,

i've got crohn's and am currently on remicade. it's worked very well, but during the last few months i've been experiencing lower right abdominal discomfort (which is nothing new) and constipation. it feels like i could go to the bathroom, but i often have trouble -- it feels like there is a blockage in my rectum, and it creates some pressure/discomfort.

a few years back i had a perianal abscess. the surgery went well, and the abscess was drained, leaving two fistulas right outside my heiney. the remicade has helped close the fistulas, and colonoscopies have shown my crohn's has activity in the perianal/rectal region.

now it feels like i'm growing a tail ( :-) ) and the pressure is pretty uncomfortable.
  • has anyone else experienced this?
  • is there anything you'd recommend to help ease the bowel movements and reduce the rectal discomfort/blockage?
  • could this discomfort be caused by too much sitting and/or straining to go to the bathroom?
  • is this possibly a sign of a more serious problem?

i'd sincerely appreciate any thoughts or advice -- this is kind of a tricky topic for me to talk to people about.

happy and healthy holidays to all!

Sounds like proctitis (inflammation in the rectom) I've often had this on and off over my 16 yrs of crohns, if that's what it is (see your doc) then a script of cortifoam (rectal meds) will help this issue (it may take a while to kick in depending on how bad the inflammation is)...

do you also feel like you're having incomplete evacuation?

i've had alternating horrbile constipation and diarrhea. if you're constipated you should try citrucel tablets. i take one in the morning if i find i'm having a problem. it's a fiber pill basically. colace can also help...it's just a stool softener that can make it a little easier to go. but if you end up going a few days and are uncomfortable you might want to try a dulcalax suppository...it's never taken longer than an hour to help me and i feel so much better afterward. hope that helps!

Does Flagyl have bad side effects.  I am currently in a flare and my GI is talking about putting me on Flagyl in additon to  upping my entocort.  I am running a temp.  Last time I was on I got thrush in my mouth.  Yuk!  I also heard you can't drink  while on it.. With the holiday season here I don't want to go on it...

It's like any antibiotic, it can have side effects, tingling, nausea...and definitely no drinking while on it...it never helped my CD symptoms for all the times I was put on it (but for me that's not unusual), just make sure you're taking a good probiotic while on flagyl or any other antibiotic (even when not on antis you should take probiotics remission or not) and always take your probiotics at least 2 hours AFTER you're done taking your antis for the day.
