Hi, i just found this forum and thought i'd join up.
For as long as i can remember i have suffered from depression, and after trying lots of medication ive ended up taking venlafaxine effexor for the last 3 years. It was working well for a while, but about 6 months ago i started feeling tired all the time, fuzzy head and generally awfull. Not to mention the horrible symptons if i forgot to take a dose.
Im on 75mg per day, which i understand is not as much as a lot of people need, but ive finally had enough of being unable to function properly so im to the docs in a short while to see if i can get off them.
From what i can gather its not going to be nice, but i really have had enough of being tied to them, so if anyone can throw some help or advice my way i would greatly appreciate it :-)

First of all welcome to the forum.

Sometimes they need to change meds... I almost wonder if it is because our body gets used to them after awhile and they are not as effective.
I had to chance 4-5 times before I found the one that worked.

I hope your doctor is able to find the right combo for you..good luck and let us know.

I take 375 mg everyday of effexor and will for the rest of my life, you might need an increase.  I just know that if you go off of it go really slowly.  I have experienced the problem with missing doses and it is no fun.  I take extended release capsules now.  I tried going off of it on my own once and it was horrible.  I was dizzy and felt like I was going to fall off of the face of the earth, so be careful.  I hope that you find something that works for you.'

Good luck,

Karen

Thank you for the welcome.
I went to the doctor, basically he didnt have a clue! He had to look it up in a book and even then he sounded unsure. I told him i wanted to come off them, so he's prescribed me 37.5mg once per day down from 75mg slow release which i am taking now. I am starting tomorrow, and he has signed me off work for a week. I know its not going to be nice, but hopefully it wont be as bad as im thinking it might be.
Thanks again for your support, ive been looking for somewhere like for a long long time

Your'e very welcome, we are all here to help you anytime that we can.  Make sure you keep us posted on your progress, if you go slow you will be okay.  Maybe he will give you some immediate release for when you get to the lower dose and you can cut them in to if you need to.

Good luck

Hi, i went back to see a different docter today as i wasnt feeling confident the other one really knew what he was doing...
Ive now been told to go back on my normal 75mg daily (slow release) and he wants me to have a blood test to see whats going on. He doesent seem to think my lethargy and fuzzy headedness is down to the venlafaxine..
The blood test is on tuesday, hopefully that will explain more.
In the meantime im trying to shake off this terrible tiredness, but that in itself is sinking me lower so im hoping the blood test will show up some problem.
Thanks for listening

Hi mrtriumph,

I am happy that you went to a different doctor. I still wonder if you are just not getting enough effexor. But I am sure the blood tests will help. I hope that you find an answer.

Good luck

I too am wondering now if maybe im not getting enough, the problem is i feel like im hitting my head against a brick wall with my docs, they just dont seem to know much about this medication. I explain how i am feeling and they look at me like i am mad - im even starting to think its literally all in my head!

Hi MrT and welcome to the forum

I'm wondering what type of doctors these are, family Doctor? It would seem that a psychiatrist would surely know how to manage the use of your meds. Good luck and hang in there...OO
