Hey everyone

I usually post on the Ulcerative Colitis forum, but this question I feel would be better answered here, since it has to do with anti-depressants.

I have been taking Effexor XR 37.5 for 2 years. I gained about 30 lbs since being on it and feel that it wasn't doing me much good anyways. So, today my Dr. prescribed me Wellbutrin XL, 150mg. and I started taking that today.

My question is this: How hard is it to wean off Effexor while going on the Wellbutrin? My dr said to take the "W" everyday and go on the "E" every other day for a week, then stop the "E" completely.

I have tried weaning off "E" before and it was SO DARN HARD that I couldn't do it.... Will it be a bit easier since I'm switching to "W"??

GOSH, I hope so!!!              Thanks for reading :)

Hi Susie

I have not been on Effexor, but have been on Wellbutrin, and was switched from one med to Wellbutrin.

I did not have any problems with the switch.. but, keep in mind it does take 4-6 weeks for any of the meds to take full effect.. just take it one day at a time, and be sure to keep in contact with your doctor about any side effects or withdrawal symptons that you may have.

Hopefully someone else on here has done the same, and they can give you more insight.

Good luck and keep us posted on how you are doing.

Hi Susie,

I think that effexor and wellbutrin are close cousins, so I think that it will be easier to wean off the effexor than if you weren't taking anything else.

I understand your fear, I went through it too. I take 375 mg effexor each day and am thinking about reducing it due to weight gain. But I am not sure if that is what is causing it because I take so many different meds.

Good luck with your med change, keep your doctor posted of any uncomfortable side effects of weaning off.

Thanks you guys....

My main problem with the Effexor is weight gain... No matter what I do it won't come off!! I buy and sell hay for a living and work VERRRRY hard physically every day. It has been hard on me because the extra weight I've gained (30+lbs.) has made a huge difference in my ability to do my job..

Hopefully now the weight will come off and I'll get back into a more physically enduring body... lol.. I'm going to take the Effexor every other day for 2 weeks (if I can do that without many withdrawls) then every two days for a week, then quitting it altogether.. I'll let you know how it goes..

Thanks again!

Hi Susie,

I really wish you the best of luck with the med change. And I hope you let us know how it is going for you. I so badly would like to go off of effexor. I take such a high dose. I am cutting back a little at a time, Doctor says that I will always have to take this medication though. But if I could get down to 150, I think that I would be doing better. He has recently added abilify to the mix and it has really helped me a lot. I am hoping that I can go with that and eventually get off of the other.

You seem to be moving around a lot. I use to be able to work so hard, I still try. I try to stay active, I guess I am just now thinking it is the effexor, because it seems no matter how little that I eat, and no matter how active I am, I just cannot lose any pounds. That just isn't fair. Oh well, a little at a time.

Good luck with the change, please let me know how it goes.

Hugs, Karen

Hi Karen

It HAD to be the Effexor making me feel so "Blah" all the time.... All I wanted to do was eat and sleep.... No wonder I gained the weight~! Don't get me wrong, I could still function, but was so tired all the time.. Since adding Wellbutrin to the mix, my appetite has gone WAY down and my energy level has gone WAY up. I Swear, this time last week, I was always wanting to take naps and snack... now I am pretty much moving all day and still feel pretty good at the end of the day. I can eat my 3 meals a day and don't have the desire to snack in between.. all the time... LOL....

I can only imagine how my body will change once I can get totally off the Effexor.. I'll definately keep you posted...

I am so happy that the wellbutrin is helping you. It sounds like you are going to be happy with it.

I am glad that you are able to do your work with ease. That is hard work, I know, I use to have a horse and just the hay that I had to get for the winter was hard work, though I am sensitive skin and every where it touches me, I break out. But I still love the horses. I can't afford one any more, so I have dogs. They are work too.

I really want to cut down on my effexor, I have cut one 75 mg pill back, but haven't told the doctor. I know that I should, but I want to lose weight so bad. I am not really heavy, but enough to make it uncomfortable to do things. And I can't fit into my skinny clothes anymore. But I thought in a couple of weeks I would cut back another pill and see how I feel. I take five 75 mg capsules a day.

The doctor said that i would have to take it the rest of my life, but I started the abilify and it really helps me a lot so I am wondering if it would be okay to cut back on the other.

I honestly hope that this works for you and please do keep us posted. I am so happy to know that you have more energy. I can go with out eating and still gain weight, that is why I now believe it is the effexor, also with what you wrote, now I am sure.

take care and have a wonderful day...

Luv and hugs, Karen

HOLY MOLY.... 5 pills a day? Wow... I was taking one 37.5 a day and I thought I was having a hard time going off of it.  How long have you been taking Effexor? How come the Dr. says you have to take it for the rest of your life? I started on Paxil, but didn't like how it made me feel so they switched me to Effexor and I've been on that for about 2 years. I'm taking it for Menopause because I get mood swings SO BAD.. my poor husband... lol.. But, the weight I've gained has been a real problem for me. I've always been thin, I'm 5'7 and usually weigh around 140 and after taking the Effexor I've gained 30 lbs. Plus, my energy level was down too, I think that was because of the Effexor AND the weight gain... sorta like a double whammy. Anyhow, I have been on Wellbutrin for 3 days and noticed the difference the first day I took it. I am finally feeling hopefull for the first time that I can get off Effexor once and for all and get my body back!

THanks for writing me back~    :)

I think that I have been taking effexor for about 10 years. I just recently started the abilify. I really would like to find something other than effexor because I went off of it once before and wow, that was awful. I always have that fear of not being able to get them and going through that again. I felt like I was falling off of the face of the earth. It was horrible. I couldn't walk, I was dizzy and very crazy. But I think with the low dose that you are on, and the wellbutrin taking it's place, that you will have a much easier time. I am on my second week of four pills and I think I am already losing weight. It isn't a lot, but I dont' want to lose too fast. I am 5'8" and I weigh way more than you. I also was very skinny. I had a hard time keeping the weight on. It would be so wonderful to get my figure back too. I have fibromyalgia so it is hard to exercise. Though I do walk a lot. And I build muscle really easy which is strange, but I use to be really physically active. Also worked on muscle toning. I miss that.

Anyway, keep us posted on your med change. I will keep you posted on mine.

Take care,
hugs, Karen

Ok, I got it... This is the way I'm going to taper and it's been working wonderfully for me~ All I do is open the capsule and dump out 1/2 of the crystals every day for a week, nexgt week I'll take 1/2 of the usual dose every other day, then I'll stop it altogether. I Havn't had a single withdrawl so far doing it this way and I'm sure the Wellbutrin has been the reason why.

I"ve got 4 more days to go then hopefully I'll be off it totally... SO far so good.. WOO HOO

Kudos for you Susie!!!

Sounds like you have it figured out. That way you will go really slow before you stop all together. I hope that this works well for you.

Susie Im am going to be going from effxor to the wellbutrin too, the effexor is making gain 40 lbs and raised my blood pressure and my doc suggested wellbutrin, but i chose the effexor instead, now i want to try the wellbutrin which i had tryed before i lost 13 lbs, so i want to make the switch, I just talked to my drs office. Dr on call may be able to prescibe the wellbutrin as my dr is out of town til may and taking any appts.  but he was the one who originally suggested i try the wellbutrin over th effesor, so the nurse is trying to see of the other dr on call will do it. She will call me and let me know. Keep your fingers crossed that he will do it. And i wont have to wait. Congratulations for doing well on your transition susie, I am happy for you... smurf ...

HI Sheryl, I am happy that you can start the wellbutrin. Susie was able to start hers before she went off of the effexor. I wonder if you could do that. I would call the office back and find out. I think that it would make the transition easier.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Oh Well,

The weeks go by fast, so you will be on the wellbutrin in no time.

Keep us posted on how it goes. Sometimes it isn't easy going off of the effexor.

I think it will be ok since I have the wellburin to replace it, and i have comeoff effesor before, wasnt easy but i did it with nothing to replace it, this time i got the wellbutirin. Just please pray for me that it work welll for me and that im ok, last time i was on wellbutrin i was irra table and  ancxious, but now i am on a anti anxiety pill, so it should cancel that part out, and just leave with the more motivation, and losing weight, and more happpier. please pray all will be ok, thank you! :-) .

Hi Sheryl,

Did they say why they won't let you take Effexor and Wellburtin at the same time? I have had an incredibly easy time transitioning from Effexor to Wellbutrin that way. I tried weaning off Effexor before without anything to replace it and the withdrawls were so HORRID that I had to go back on it and have been stuck on it since. What I do now (I'm ALMOST off it for good) is open the capsule and dump it into my palm. Then I take one of the capsule halves and scoop just a tiny bit of the crystals into it and then put the capsule back together and take it. I'm going to take my last tiny bit of Effexor this Friday so I have the weekend to see how it goes without any at all. I have had a little bit of insomnia from the Wellbutrin, but I'll take that ANY DAY over gaining weight and feeling totally lazy all the time. I can already feel the difference in my energy level. I'm so excited to be this close to going off of Effexor.. I was so afraid I'd be stuck on it for the rest of my life and that I'd have to deal with being heavier and feeling like a lazy bum.

I'll be thinking of you and I look forward to hearing how it's going on your switch! Susie

P.S.. My dr says that Wellbutrin and Effexor actually work very well together so I'm confused why your dr wouldn't let you do the switch like I did... It really made a huge difference in the side effects....

But luckily for me I forgot to take the dose 2x this week, so this is day 4 with out the 2nd dose so I only have 3 more days till I can switch completley over, sounds like i better do it in the morning. wish me luck tongue ...

Yes, definately take the Wellbutrin in the morning... It gives me more energy to do things during the day and totally changed my appetite habits. I have trouble sleeping at night right now, but I have been taking ambien 10mg at night to get me through the hard nights. I have had NO Brain Zaps, no nausea, no vertigo like I did with Effexor when I tried to taper down. I think maybe the only withdrawl symptom I have had is just a LITTLE bit of diahreah (sp) from really cutting down on the Effexor. Today was the first day I didn't take on at all and I'm going to try and quit it for good at this point and see what happens. It's now 10:04pm and I feel pretty darn good actually.

I can't tell you how happy I am that I finally feel like I can get off this HORRID drug Effexor. (at least it was horrid for me) Wellbutrin has been a Godsend for me, Other than feeling a little bit amped up all the time, I have NO complaints about it whatsoever. I'm looking forward to losing at least SOME of this weight the Effexor put on me, and I'm really glad that I finally have some energy back!

Ok, not quite able to get off the Effexor yet... I tried but I guess I have to slow down my taper a bit. I have been dumping out the capsule into my palm then scooping up just a little bit of the crystals back into the capsule and taking that... I'm guessing it was about 1/4 of my usual dose of 37.5mg. I was doing fine on that and then Thursday I thought, heck, I'll just try and go off of it. SO, Thursday I didn't take one and by Friday afternoon, I was starting to feel the brain zaps that I would get before and a little bit of vertigo.. It did get to the point where I had to take another little bit of Effexor and then by the evening I was fine again.. So, I did take a tiny bit today and will just keep lowering the dose over the next couple of weeks till I'm taking only a couple of the crystals in the capsule, THEN I'll try and go off it for good again. I'm still hanging in there and the Wellbutrin has definately helped as far as the severity of the withdrawls.

Just wanted to update my progress... It's going to be a bit slower than I thought, but I'm hopefull that in a couple more weeks, I'll be able to get off it for good then...

It is so hard isn't it Susie? But you got the right idea, I think it will work your way. I am still down to 4 capsules, been a little irritable, but I am not sure if it is the effexor, but I am determined to at least cut down and see if it helps with my weight.

Good luck to you.

hugs, Karen
