hey all,
i'm ususally on the colitis forum, but i have been dealing with depression for a few years. my doctor just upped my dose of wellbutrin to 300. it has helped SO MUCH. i feel so much relief--i have more energy and i just feel like things are "manageable." i went to get a refill and i noticed they gave me the generic kind. i haven't taken it before and i have heard a lot about how the generic form of wellburtin is not a successful. i'm reallu scared because i don't want the meds to stop working. i am willing to pay more for the regular wellbutrin, but i thought i would ask if anyone has had experience with this. any help would be much appreciated.

Amitriptyline to slow gastric emptying; Forvia; Compazine; 2 TSP of apple cider vinegar before meals (weird, but so far I am a believer in it).

I would give it a try, I don't know if it is different than the brand name, but have faith that it will be the same. Hopefully somebody will come on who has tried it.

Good luck,

Good Morning birdiem,

My understanding is a generic drug contains the same active ingredients in the same dosage form as a brand name drug. The strength and purity of generic medications are strictly regulated.

The FDA requires all generic manufacturers to prove that a generic drug will have the same medical result as its Name-Brand equivalent by measuring the rate and extent of drug absorption. The generic drug should treat your illness or condition with the same success and safety as its brand name equivalent. Generics have to meet the same meticulous requirements as Name-Brand drugs.

Some of the generic drugs are even made by the same company that makes the trade name.

However, I am not a professional and I want you to feel comfortable about what medications you are taking so perhaps you could talk to your physician.  Once you have all the info you need you can make an informed consent.

Take care.

There was a great article in Prevention about the Generic from Teva pharmaceuticals. It is the same ingredients but the matrix for the extended release was not the same. It dumped the drug into your bloodstream at a larger and faster rate than Wellbutrin XL. This was confirmed by 2 independent labs. The people that took generic complained of depression returning especially at the end of the day. My pdoc has now put brand name only on my presciption for Wellbutrin XL 300mg.

I hope this helps,

I am on the bupropion HCL XL, Starting my second month tomorrow, I am also on deplin, I am gonna to give the XL a few more weeks and see what happens with the deplin, if no change then I will call my doc and ask her to put me back on the name brand. But as with alot of medications it depends on the person, what works me for me may not work for you, I would give it a try and see what happens unless you are really uncomfortable about it, talk to your doc. If you want I can update you and let you know if I have to ask to be changed back.
The center of the problem never knows it's the problem, all it knows is it has a problem with all the problems that have a problem with it, what it doesn't realize is if it wasn't a problem all the other problems wouldn't be a problem.

My husband takes the generic welbutrin 300 xl and so far no difference. Iwill report that years ago, I was taking Pamelor and the doctor insisted that I take brand name as the generic did not work as effectively. So definitely talk this over with your doctor. She/He should know for sure.
