Hi. I'm new to this forum, and I'm really hoping someone out there can help me. I'm 42 and believe I'm in perimenopause. I went on Zoloft about three years ago for depression and was doing well with it (even through the death of both of my parents in 2006), but lately I've noticed something different. It seems that during ovulation, I get major-league depression again. It lasts for about a week and then disappears and I'm back to my old self again. I've read that women who have pms get depressed right after ovulation, but mine seems to start with its onset and go away about a week before my period. The Zoloft seems to work the rest of the time, but during that week, I am absolutely miserable: tired, sad, cranky, muddle-headed. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms during ovulation as opposed to after ovulation?

It does sound like perimenopause. I have been going through that for years, but mine is about a week before my cycle. It use to go away when I would start, but now it doesn't seem to. And I sometimes cycle every 21 days instead of 28, so I have more of it. It's fun getting older isn't it? LOL...

Oh yes, welcome to the Healling Well Depression Forum... I think that you will like it here, the members are wonderful. Keep posting and let us know how you are doing.

Oh yes that is me all of the way. It seems to get worse the older I get,and it is to a point to where I think I should just hide out for a couple of weeks and that way no one will know how bad it is!

Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum.  I have not had that problem but I am the Granny here so I don't remember that I had issues with depression at that time.

I know there have been some discussions under the A & P Forum too on this topic. Here is the link to the A & P Thread:

I think that would be a good idea too, Megie. Doc told me yesterday he thinks I'm too young to be in peri. But I've read that peri is 8-10 yrs before menopause, and if that's so, then I probably am peri. I have 4 older sisters, 1 who is 60+ and of course is done with meno, 1 who is 50 and is going thru it, one who is 47 and is also going thru it, and 1 who is 46 and has been done with meno for about 1 1/2 yrs. And Mom completed meno at 39. So at age 42, I figure I'm right on schedule. Anyway, I'm having lab work done tomorrow to check on that and other things, so we'll see. I've noticed that over the last 6 or so months, my depression has gotten very bad at ovulation, but otherwise is manageable the rest of the month.

As for hubbies coming on board with it, maybe they will. Maybe HW should also have a board for guys with prostate cancer? There are some conditions unique to gender, and it might be helpful to include them too.

I don't remember if they had a forum on Perimenopause. But somebody that has been here longer might. I can ask admin about it if you all would like me to. Dont' know if they will go for it or not, but it is worth a try.

Best wishes to all,

Either way Sheryl,

I will see what I can do by talking to Peter. I don't know if he will go for it, but it is worth a try. And in the meantime feel free to continue discussing it on this forum.

Hugs sweetie,
Karen...

ahey everyone..... menopause and depression great mix. I myself burst into Dr office and told him I was having a good day as I burst into tears and told him I felt like the whole world was a circus and I was on a tightrope looking down with a gun in one hand and tissues in the other, problem was i really didnt know which to use...... I am now on paxil......... I still have some rough times as menapause issues are much BIGGER than most drugs out there.... My depression is much more tolerable
When I started counting my blessings my whole world turned around.

I completely understand what you are going through.... I am just 41 and have been dealing with this since age 32. Most days wish someone would just shoot me and put me outta my misery. rolleyes   I never sought any medical help bc I thought it was just my norm since my Mother has had Major League periods much of her life. Anyway I finally had enough the other day and went to the doc and now they have me scheduled for bloodtest ( I am worried) shocked  they also scheduled me for ultra sound.

I am truly beginning to think that someday someone is going to discover I am nuts and lock me up. On top of all of that hubby is so disappointed that he isn't getting sex. Yuck. I hate my body was kinda hott if I do say so myself now I am always bloated and puffy and the meer capture of my image will send me into tears.

Hi All,

I'm into this 'peri' stage as well, and it's given me a whole new chapter in my struggles with depression. I've made some changes to my diet which have helped quite a bit (low sugar, low carbs, low or no gluten, much less caffeine, etc.). Sleep has proven to be more difficult to get, but more important, too.....so that's been a bit of a struggle. Thank goodness for therapy and the support of others going through it!
