When I was first diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, I was determined that it would not come to define me, to set the limits on who I am as a person. As my depression worsened and the physical realities of the Parkinson's became more invasive, the lines between who "I" am and "my" disease have become more and more blurred. I can no longer deny they are part of me when they take up so much of my time and energy....more and more everyday it seems. How DO we define ourselves with something as invasive as depression comes in and turns everything upside down. It certainly isn't like catching a cold.

This is a very deep question... It is so hard with depression alone, but you are fighting another disease as well. Parkinson's disease is so very difficult. I really feel for you at this time.

How we are defined is as an individual. Though the depression cloud is hanging over, you are still who you are. And I think it is the steps that you take to battle it that define who you are.

Are you getting your depression treated with a doctor or counseling? I would recommend both. Medication keeps the symptoms under control, but the counseling is what really helps you to see the person that you really are. I know with help you can get through this. And in the meantime we are here for you. So keep posting and let us know how you are doing.

Best wishes to you,
hugs, Karen

You have a lot to deal with in your life lunardance - but I can see from reading your posts that you actually are stronger than you think :-)

It always amazes me when people say to me that I am such a strong person -and it's usually when I am feeling at my most vulnerable and feeling stink about myself. But it is how I appear on the outside..

Depression is as invasive as we wanna let it be really..we actually can choose to be defined as someone who is depressed or someone who is willing to learn new skills, take meds as necessary and beat depression off with a very big stick and make the most of every day we are above ground..sheesh lol - there you have it!
