I went cold turkey from taking zoloft for about 9 years. The last 2 up to 200mg. I feel awful. I am wondering how long this will last or if I should take 50 mg for a few days and keep tapering. (Dr are no help - they look at you like you are crazy for even want to try going off.)

Hi 214,

I was on Zoloft a few years ago as I was trying to recover from PTSD caused by a car accident and some other events in my life. Even though the flashbacks and depression were lessening, my nurse practitioner warned me a great deal about how to gradually go off my medication. The worst way to do it is to go cold turkey, especially since you were on quite a high dosage. If you intend to go off your meds entirely, please talk to your doctor about how to gradually start lessening your dosage. It may take more time than you desire, but it will be a much healthier way to do it, and you'll feel better too.

Hang in there and keep us posted!

Hi 214,

Nightwish is right, you have to taper off slowly. I went off of effexor one time and it was horrible. But I went offf of it because I was feeling better. Only to find out I was feeling better due to the effexor. So be careful and go slow.

Best wishes for a wonderful day,

Hugs, Karen

I agree with the slow wean under your physician's guidance.  I have read some really bad suffering from members that have gone cold turkey.

Take care
