I am 25 years old and have been on Effexor XR since 2001. I started out at 75 mg of it and now have been on 150 mg for 8 months. It truly saved my life back in 2001 but I dont feel that way anymore! I dont feel like it is working for me anymore. I am depressed all the time and have extreme anxiety that I take .5 mg of Clonazapam for. I feel like I am in a fog 24/7 and cannot seem to snap out of it.
I am truly scared to get taken off of Effexor. I have had my dose lowered in the past and it was horrible. There have been times when I did not have it for a day and I literaly thought I was going to die. I know they "say" that it is not addicting but I disagree! I am so addicted to this drug and feel that it has taken over my life. I do not know what to do. I heard about Abilify on t.v. and am wondering if anyone has ever taken the Effexor XR and the Abilify together. If so what are your experiences with the two?
I need some advice! Please!

Hi trishthedish,

Welcome to HealingWell. I hope you find the friendship and support you're looking for here.

Don't stop taking the Effexor on your own. You absolutely need to talk to your doctor about any changes in your medications. I have taken Effexor and Abilify together but I have bipolar. I have heard that Abilify can help relieve depression when taken in addition to other anti-depressants. So you'd need to stay on something else. If the Effexor isn't working though, I'd talk to your doctor about trying a different AD. There are dozens. One may work better and not make you feel as if you are in a fog.

Hi trishthedish,

Welcome to HealingWell and we are so happy you found us.  You will find many members here that know exactly what your going through.

I would see your physician and talk about your meds.  I have seen the commercials for Ads plus Abilify  but I do not know why the Abilify enhances the AD.  Another good question for your Doc.

Go with your list of questions and especially the problems with coming off these meds.

Your right, no one told me up front about the difficulty of coming off the meds.

We have a new comers thread, I will pull it to the top for you. :-)
Gentle Hugs to you

HI Trish,

I take effexor and abilify together, it works really well. I take 375mg of effexor every day. You might need your dose increased. Talk to your doctor and see what he thinks.

But since starting the abilify, my thinking is a lot better and I haven't been depressed. So I think that it will work well for you. Let us know how it goes.

Hugs, Karen
