I have had SEVERE depression for the past six months, very suicidal and racing bad thoughts non stop in my head of killing myself.  I have tried lexapro, prozac, paxil, abilify, lamictal, depakote, lithium, buspar and they have all made me ten times worse and hospitalized so now I have been put on Topamax which is sup to work for people who can't take anti depressants is anyone else taking this and is it helping? I have just started taking it  yesterday and would like to know if it has helped anyone else with a similar situation like mine.

My sister took it and it helped her, also helped her lose weight.

I hope that it works for you.

Hi Sherriann,

I'm on topamax and it's worked well for me too.

I haven't got the extreme sensitivity to meds that you seem to, though. Good luck,

let us know how you're doing on it.

I have not taken this med but I do want to wish you luck with it and hope it is the one that finally works for you.

Take care

Serefena

Thank you for responding (to all of u) I'm not sure if I am using this correctly its my first time using something like this. Anyways, was wondering how long did it take for the topomax to start working for you? I have been taking it for five days and feel no different yet. Did you have severe depression also is that why it was prescribed to you???

I had those exact symptoms from being on anti-depressants. The worse I would get, the more they would up my meds. The more they upped my meds, the more I would get even worse. It turned out to be Seratonin Syndrome. I was diagnosed depressed, but it turned out my symptoms were primarily caused by hormone imbalance, B-12 deficiency & low iron (borderline anemic). If you do not have chemically based depression & they put you on anti-depressants, they can cause racing thoughts, anxiety, insomnia, etc. -- I developed many of the criteria for diagnosing mania. My counselor really thought something didn't seem right so she sent me to a neurologist. He had treated me for years for migraines & recognized right away that there was a direct correlation between the dosing schedule & the worsening of 24/7 racing suicidal thoughts. I got off the meds & my thoughts slowed way down. I was still depressed, but at least had time to try to deal with the thoughts without feeling like I absolutely HAD to act them out just to get them out of my head.
I won't say it was an easy road after that. I got hormones & vitamins and they made a noticeable difference right away, but it was a huge amount of work for me to learn how to deal with my depression. It can be done, though. Hang in there.

Praying for you,
frances

PS - Topamax was the least bad of the bunch that I tried. So if nothing else is wrong, hopefully that will do the trick for you. Best wishes!

Sherri,

I'm so glad you posted back. I just started taking it two days ago. I'm at 25 mg. I'm bipolar by the way, but I also struggle with depression. So far, I've noticed great sleep as well as being calmer when waking up. I'd like to talk to you about this more, pm me so maybe we could exchange email addresses? I am online most of the time. It helps to have someone to talk to when depressed...

btw, what is your diagnosis? frances is correct in making sure to rule out any physical or hormonal problems that can possibly cause depression.

topamax is not an antidepressant, it is an anticonvulsant used usually as a mood stabilizer for those with mood disorders. seeing you are in some sort of crisis, my best guess is that your pdoc is trying to stabilize you enough so you can get the treatment you need without flipping out.

stay well,

eli
