Hello,

I am new to this site but have experienced bouts of depression through the years. I posted earlier about my difficulty with my son graduating from high school and soon moving on to college. I started taking Sam-E a few months ago to help combat some depression and it seemed to make things better. Recently I have started feeling very sad and depressed and the Sam-E isn't working as well. Has anyone had experience with this supplement and did you have to increase your intake after a period of time.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

Tom

Hi Tom,

I am sorry that I can't help you with the Sam-e. But I am sure that there will be somebody coming along with some information on it.

I would like to welcome you to the depression forum. You have come to a good place and the members are so kind and compassionate here. There is also no judging that goes on here and everybody can understand how you feel. Please keep posting, I am sure that there will be somebody that can help you with your problem.

Supplements kind of work that way, they either work or they don't.

Best wishes for a wonderful day.

Hugs, Karen

Hello Tom,

I have read the Sam-e works for some people with minor depressive episodes but for major clinical  depression I feel you would do better by checking with your physician.

There are many meds out there as well as therapy is often a wise choice.

Welcome to HealingWell and the Depresssion Forum.

yeah agree with kitt. sam-e may not be used wih some anti-dep meds. here in australia it is expensive too. depression is a medical condition also. not knocking sam-e, i know some people who do well on it. seek a medical opinion. we are here for you. so, keep posting. jamie yeah

I tried to go the "natural" herbal route.  It did not work well for me.  I never tried sam-e but I did try St. Johns Wort, 5-htp, nerve herbal blend formulas, many variations.  I finally gave in and went to my physician and got started on a low dosage of Celexa.  It takes a while to work but I am feeling better everyday.  I had a very severe reaction to a medication in January and was very leary of going the pharmacuetical route, but I guess at this point I do not have a choice if I want to feel good.  Be careful with herbal formulas, they are not always what they claim to be and how do you determine the dosage properly?  I think they may work for some people, but not on major depression or bipolar.

Hope things get better for you soon.
