I am currently 17 years old, and I'm worried.  For a couple years now I have been suffering from depression, I can't exactly pinpoint when it started. (I think because I thought that it was normal and it would eventually go away)  My school's guidance councellor has told me to consider taking anti-depressants but my parents believe that it will pass and that I should wait-it-out, and I can't get comfortable with the idea of depending on medication to make me feel better.  Only a select few of my friends know about it but the problem is I don't think they really understand what I mean or how it feels.  I've even gotten into some really big arguments lately for silly things that have not irritated me before.  My biggest issue lately is that I have turned to imagining the unimaginable when I can no longer take any more stress or problems. (I'd rather not mention the word)  If anyone can help in any way, it will be greatly appreciated.  Thank-you.

Hi Knight_92,

Welcome to the HealingWell depression forum. I am so glad that you have found us. Depression is hard, especially at your age. You have so much going on in your mind anyway.

Maybe you should talk to your physician and see what he/she says. You could always go into therapy if you don't want to take medications. But I want to mention something another moderator mentioned on another post. Depression is like your mind being broken. It is a chemical embalance in your brain. So your brain is kind of broken. If your arm was broken, you would fix it, wouldn't you? So fix your brain. Either with medication, or with therapy. I do both. I go to therapy and see a psychologist. And I also see a psychiatrist for my medication. And my depression has somewhat gone into remission. I have been doing very well for a long time after suffering from depression for over 30 years. So give it a try.

Hugs, Karen

yeah, see your doc, the longer you leave it.........well, ......the sooner.......well medication early may just be for a bit, and as karen has said, counselling will really help. keep posting, depression is real common, and there are many treatments available, and not all treatments require medication. so be honest with your doc, thus you will receive the best treatment options that will really help you. good luck. jamie.

Hey. I was diagnosed with depression at 15 years old and I know how tough it can be. I would not have been able to get through without support from medication and from a counsellor. Medication usually isn't a life sentence. My brain chemistry was out of whack and medication helped correct it while I worked through my issues and my brain learnt to correct itself. Get a second opinion and find a counselor you 'click' with and trust.
