Jamie,

Thank you for posting this. Yes, it is very sad that all this has happened. And I guess all we can do is pray for those in need.

You are a sweet soul.

Hugs, Karen

Ugh, I was watching the 20/20 or Dateline thing last night about Albinism. If any of you saw it you will know what I mean. My wife and I were watching it and when the part about how they are attacking and selling the body parts of those with Albinism in Tanzania, I thought I was gonna have a breakdown and I think my wife was peering over kind of expecting one. I can't comprehend some of the things people do.

This has hit me hard too--so much misery in the world. And our crime and culture here in the US has changed so much since I was young that you don't have to look very far to be depressed.

One thing I've become conscious about in cultures that are not as developed as ours is that people live together. I'm thinking that they are probably not as lonely as our culture can make one feel.

Yes, we are so affluent that we can have all the conveniences and we're healthier and live longer. And even our poor live well compared to a lot of the world.

I think my depression is mostly loneliness now that I'm retired and yes, isn't it wonderful that I can afford to live by myself. I am blessed and thankful for what I have.

If I were just healthy, I'd rather be over there helping in some way or in a bigger way here than I am. I do volunteer, but not enough to fill up the days.

It's a gloomy Saturday afternoon and not much to look forward to on yet another empty weekend.

I'm thankful for being able to come to HW where I feel a little less alone.

Thank you Zapped, you put a different light on it since you've seen firsthand how families resent having to take care of elders, etc. in those poor countries. Maybe I've watched too many foreign films set in countries where the story plot is of a family whichi is so close knit and loving and come through desperate circumstances together. I suppose the truth is there's some of both--just as there is here in our country of affluence.

Right now my health wouldn't allow it--but I am optimistic that I will get better and I've considered becoming an in-home health aide. I remember when my elderly neighbor came home with injuries from an accident, someone stayed with her for a shift so that she could stay in her home rather than a nursing home.

Is there anyone who does this? I think I'd have to earn a home health aid certificate?
