I am so tired of trying new medications..............the side effects really get to me and I think
some of them are in my head.
How long does it take for a new medication to take effect?

Hi April,
I can totally relate. It can be such an aggravating process to find a helpful medication -- and sometimes it ends up being a combination of 2 or 3 meds that end up doing the trick. Typically it takes 6-8 weeks to medications to reach their maximum effectiveness. Some people start noticing some benefits sooner than that, but it just depends on the medication & the individual. Unfortunately, some of the side effects can kick in pretty quickly & can take weeks to resolve.

Hang in there, though. Many people do eventually find relief. :)

peace,
frances

Thanks so much. Hopefully after years of trying new medication my new doctor will start me on something that will finally help.

Hi April,

Frances is right, it often takes a combination of different meds to help some people. I take pristiq, xanax and abilify together. And it works well, but it took a long time to find the right mix. So don't give up. I am sure that you will find what works for you. But I know, it can be frustrating.

Best wishes,

Hugs, Karen

Thanks Karen: when did you start Pristiq? did you try it first alone?
I called my doctor today and hopefully she can start me on Pristiq, I am currently taking cymbalta and have been on it for about 2yrs just recently she added abilify 2wks ago and
the side effects are bothering me so I stopped. I have tried many medications with no help
I am so tired of taking medication............

I know how you feel right now. I take ten different things, not all are for depression. But just filling my pill box on Saturday night is enough to stress me out. But always relieved when it is done.

I am currently going off of effexor and onto pristiq. The abilify helps me tremondously. I am sorry that it doesn't work for you. But there are other mood stabilizers out there that you could try.

With this being said, I hope that things get better for you. I know how hard depression can be. Keep trying, never give up. Work with your doctor. I am sure that he/she will find what is right for you.

Hugs, Karen

April,
Wishing you luck with Group Therapy tomorrow. As far as which is "better", I think that depends both on the individual & on the other people in the group. I've been both to groups that I hated & to groups that I really benefited from. Here's hoping that you find yourself in the later.

peace,
frances
