I used to post on fibro, but since being dx'ed w/ MDD, severe reoccurrences, I wanted to talk to the experts?
I have just finished my 2nd ECT session out of 9. My anti-d's had stopped working, lots of suicidal ideation, lack of personal hygiene, did not leave house for 10 days, nor take any phone calls.
I would like to hear any opinions from patients-my primary says it can be very successful, altho you usually need a tune up (once a month or so) My doc is using unilateral and I've had mo memory loss at all. I have starting to hum again and pay attention to my plants. I am hopeful but don't want to pin all my hopes on this. Please reply honestly. Thank you, Bayoub

hi, jamie here,

have posted a lot on ECT. i too had treatment in 2004. unilateral as well. i had 6. i did however had some minor residual memory loss, sore head and fuzzy for a bit. this passed in 2 weeks. took a few months to kick in. i was good for around a year. i think the post is still current. i am a advocate for ECT. it is not fully understood by many, and the stigma is still out there. hoping your continued treatments are effective. have also posted about maintence ECT, i know of many who have this, some with medication and some without. however, here in australia the treatment is shown to be effective on the whole for resistant depression. check out the posts. maybe karen can bring them up for you. (forum moderator) -if they are still there. theswan has some excellent input on none seizing ECT, so check them out. hoping the rest of your treatments aare successful. with healing compassion, jamie.

thanks Jamiee-yes my doc did 2 years of residency in Europe where it is more prevalent and had only good things to say about it. US has a stigma, even my husband begged me not to tell anyone about it. I joked that I would come out looking like a cross of Bride of Frankenstein and a zombie from "Night of the Living Dead"-LOL. He didn't want me to do it, but I said ""HHHHMMMMM, possible suicide or a little electricity, which your brain runs on anyway" what a no brainer. Thanks-I'll see if I can pull up thread, not sure how to do it tho-any advice? Thanks again Bayoub

I pulled up one for you. I had to go back 15 pages to find it. There is another one that I am looking for. The beginning to this one. But I think that this one has some good information on it.

To bump up an old thread, all you have to do is post on it. I usually just type in 'bump'. That usually works well.

I hope that the ect goes well for you.

Hugs, Karen

MY dear friends at Healingwell-

I am on treatment 6 of ect. After number 5, all I could do was sleep and lie in bed for 36 hrs. Anyone else get this really oppressed feeling? I felt disoriented today, unstable, had to hold hubby's arm, groggy spaced. Do you all have these feelings right after treatment? Do they disssipate over time? I told doc I felt like I wass backsliding, but she says I had a massive shock on no.5....there is so much to be mearned about this stuff.....I try not to get my hopes up but after 15 anti-ds,  cognitive behabioral therapy, visualization, yoga and biofeeddback, and haveing worn a trough in our king size bed from so much time there(LOL), I am willing to tryanything short of walking on needles.
I used to be a firecracker, loved nothing better than arguing politics/religion etc over bottles of wine, read 4-6 books per week, and planning on helping our shelter for abused kids...I WANT MY LIFE BACK> Can anybody give me some positive feedback on ect? Does it take a few weeks to kick in? OH God, help ypu child, your servant, your Lamb.

yes a few weeks, your synapes will awaken soon, the nueral pathways will get working soon. sounds weird but i would be worried if you were not a little groggy etc, this shows that the treatments are having postive effects. give your head some time to refire. take some time to rest, things will become clearer. with compassion, jamie.

Dear Gang:  I am upto shock 7 out of 9. I told My Doc I wasn't feeling better, so she has gone to bilateral treatments, which incurs more memory loss. "Course, I live on Mississippi Gulf Coast where the eye of Katrina hit, and 5 yrs later there is still plenty to forget-lol.

I have been reading about htis Cranial elecroshock therapy, which is a hand held unit to be used at home...Gee whiz, can ya tell I"m grasping at straws here.....I've read alot and can't find much negative-BUTthat may mean they have just evaded intense scrutiny.  Anybody know about this gadget? surely appreciate the answers and the talk-I've isolated myself soo much my "friends" just don't call. Like my mother told me "if you don't have anything nice to say...."

I am so glad you are here-hubby reies to understand and even helps out a bit, but he is bipolar with cancer and we have a 13 yr old daughter, so  our cups runneth over alright. Just thank you for being out there everyone. God Bless you/  Bayoub

Hi Bayoub,

I am so happy that you posted and that your treatments are almost over. I think in time you will feel better. I know that there are side effects. But they should go away in time.

Keep posting and let us know how you are doing. With much compassion.

Hugs, Karen

dear Karen and Jamiee-thanks so much for encouraging words.....I actually woke up this am not wishing I was still asleep.
I think the ect and effexor might work if I give it a chance. We are very busy here today. Our beloved SAINTS made the super bowl and we have our huge mardi gras parade in our teeny town, and of course, New orleans is having 6 oor so parades....as with most events here, it is all family oriented (not like Bourbon St)....the parades turn us all back into kids for awhile...anywAY, THANKS for listening-will keep you posted.
