i was recently put on amitryptiline for sleep and put on vicodin for an infected tooth.. i took both at the same time, what is going to happen. i read on a site that taking both has a moderate interaction.. i did call the pharmacy and asked them what would happen and they said that it would just make me extremely tired but i would like to get another opinon on it

The amatryptaline will make you tired alone. And the vicodin is a mild narcotic type pain reliever. I don't think anything bad will happen to you. You will probably sleep through your pain. I am not a professional, but I take norco which is a strong vicodin type medication and I take ambien for sleep and nothing bad has happened. If you feel really concerned about it, call your doctor and ask him what to expect. I think he wouldn't have prescribed that if he was worried about it.

I hope that you feel better.

Hugs, Karen

My favorite place to check drug interactions is www.drugstore.com/pharmacy/drugchecker/default.asp. But I bet the pharmacy is correct - sleep for you!

thank you all for the comments.. i take 50mg of amitryptiline and 5-500 of the vicodine.. nothing has really happened it honestly didnt make me that tired either!!! thank you for the welcomes!! i just didnt want something bad to happen and not know it and figured a second opinion from other patients would help me feel better.. i have an infected tooth that needs to get fixed.. and my sleep problem started in january after i had surgery on my knee.. it was a hefty surgery they had to go in and break my tibia and do like 3 other things and screw it all together.. here it is almost may and im still in severe pain from it.. i dont wanna stay on the pain meds for that much longer because of the addiction people form. i believe my sleep has something to do with the pain meds, when i dont take them i can not sleep, its like i cant lay still for more than five minutes.. its horrible.. thank you again everyone!! :)

understand somewhat jd08. i am on seroquel for sleep, yeah massive insomnia. the immunity duck has been well....broken. i am on a minimum of 1200mg, thus sometimes i go a night without it, this is due to the immunity factor, been on it awhile. the no sleep part is not good. my brain goes into meltdown, also i am a natural night-owl, thus i get everything done at night. catch 22 so to speak, nothing else works, except for chloryrl hydrate. this is a psychiatric hospital drug. had it once, did not sleep for 5 days, was totally psycohtic, after drinking the black stuff-of wich 2 shrinks had to sign for i was asleep 5 minutes later. and for 12 hrs straight!!!

keep talking with your doc. maybe some tinkering might help. with healing compassionate thoughts, jamie. hang in there.

Pain pills such as vicodin, percocet, ect, do keep people awake at first. Later on they let you sleep. And some of the stronger ones if taken over a long period of time, will make you nod out. Fall asleep all of a sudden. I am sorry that the vicodin isn't helping your pain, but if you can live with some pain. Don't go to stronger meds, that is when you get addicted. You can wean off the vicodin rather easily after your pain goes away. I hope that the elival helps you sleep in time. I take ambien, but often try melatonin instead, it is a natural sleep aid that can help a lot. Also there is sometihing called sleepy time tea that has valerian in it and it really works good. These are both natural remedies.

Best wishes,

Karen

thank you so much karen... i have tried to ween myself off of them... but here's the story.. when i was 14 my babysitters son hit me with his bike while i was on mine, i fell off and broke a water sack in my right knee!!! ever since then i have been having trouble with it.. a couple years ago i went to the emergency room and they told me i have femoral petalla syndrome.. i had surgery on it in june of last year... not even 7 months later when i turned 20 i had to have another surgery where the broke my tibia and did a bunch of other things.. i have been on pain meds for a couple of years now... it sucks.....

and as of my conceren about the amitr. and the vicodin.. i dont think it did anything, didnt even make me tired... but i woke up at 5am with the flu andhave been sick all day.. its like a never ending problems for me.. if its not one thing its the next... i guess i just gotta get used to the fact of not having a normal life again i guess!!!
thank you soooo much everyone!!!

Jade,

I am so sorry to hear about your problems with your knees. I have bad knees too. I was walking out of a store once and missed the step (they were concrete), landed on both knees. They are both bad now.

I am glad that you like the sleepy time tea. I love it. I take ambien too. Sometimes it works, I get a more rested sleep. But they changed brands (generic) and these are too strong. I wake up groggy. Don't like that.

Have a great day.

Hugs, Karen
