I know someone who is suffering from severe sudden mental status changes. She was fine and normal before, but everysince two years ago, she started to talk to herself, hearing voices, people talking to her about their feeling and otehr feeling, experiencing severe headache, loss interest in life, having suspicious thoughts that someone out there are trying to hurt her.

Her family and the patient has been to different doctors and hospitals but the patient is still suffering. Treatment and even after one visit at a mental hospital have worsen her symptoms.  The doctors diagnosed the patient who schizophrenic disorders and depression and placed her in the mental hospital for 1 week. However, a week after in the mental hospital, the patient came home very fearful of the place and her mental status was worsen. Her family members spend countless amount of efforts with her to provide the patient psychological support and the patient recover a little.  Everyone living around her has been emotionally suffering for years now and it is still going...

Please....please...please....if anyone or any professionals out there who might know a cure or any effective treatments at all for this kind of symptom, please help...

Hi Grapefruit,

Welcome to the Healing well Depression forum. Unfortunately this is kind of out of our league here. Schitzophrenia can be controlled with medications. And before I go any farther, I am sorry to hear about your friend. My mother was a paranoid schitzophrenic, but unfortunately she didn't take her meds a lot of the time. And was totally out of control. Hearing the voices and thinking that everybody was out to get her.

The best thing that I could recommend is get as much information on it as you can. Make sure she it taking her meds. It might take a little while for them to fully work. I truly hope that she gets better and that she can enjoy her life.

We do have other members who suffer with this. They will be on and hopefully can give you some advice. You are a good friend to care so much about her. And I truly hope that she gets better.

Keep posting and let us know how things are going.

Bless you for being so concerned. And I really hope she gets better soon.

Hugs, Karen

Thank you Karen!

To continue with our discussion, the patient has tried three kind of psychiatric meds but then she denied any further drugs treatment because she doesn't think that she has schizophrenia or the medications work for her. She also stated that the medications gave her a weird feeling and she didn't feel good when taking it. I looked into the medications side effects profile for schizophrenic meds and they are lots of negative side effects. In fact I thought it might even worsening the symptoms with longterm use. It that correct?

Her family members have tried very hard to get her to take medications but it is not working since the patient is unwillingly want to take any medications because it has not helping her but instead give her weird feeling, so the patient turned to reject any further medication treatments.

Can a normal person without any family member with known psychiatry disorder get these kind of symptoms in his/her later age? It seems strange to me that she get it in her early 30th?

The patient symptoms are often "off" and "on". Sometimes she feel so depress and just crying and even cursing. She cursed to those she thought cursed her. Many times she told me that some one out there who didn't like her has cursed her and that was the reason why she is feeling like this now. She recognize that the feeling is abnormal yet she claimed that she is normal and when symptoms comes she cry, curse, yelling, etc...

Her family members are extremely drain of energy and ethusiasm about their life. The patient has dragged everyone around her down. It is excruciating painful and distressful for her family. Please help me to find help for her and or find other alternative treatments for her? Do you think she could benefit from some kind of electromagnetic radiation treatment? I don't know just some wild thoughts.

Please...please...help...

Hey grapefruit,

I have a relative who was like this. She kept hearing voices and such but then it stopped. I think it was because she began talking to someone more. Maybe you can have her talk to you more? Do some activities with her or something maybe? I do agree with Karen though, get much information as you can. And you are an AWESOME friend to care about her. : )

Hope she feels better

Hugs and love,
Adela

Hi there Grapefruit,

I don't know what to tell you about which treatment would be best for her. But she is going to have to help herself get better. You can be there for support and direct her, but when it comes down to doing it she has to be the one.

It is very difficult when somebody is suffering from her symptoms, she believes what she is hearing. She has to get better to realize the difference. And often people who are like her, don't want to take their medications due to the side effects and sometimes they just don't feel that they need them.

You are a kind soul to be so concerned for the family, but they have to take the steps to get help. Like I say, you can support them, or maybe direct them to some type of mental health help, but they have to take the steps to fix this situation. She may even need some hospitalization. I don't know.

I hope that things get better for them. Maybe saying a prayer for them would help you to feel better. I am not saying to give up hope, this could work itself out for the best. Most things do.

Hugs, Karen
