im new to healing well today and i joined because i really just need some way to express myself. I want support, help but can't find a way to get it through the people in my life around me. I haven't been able to tell anyone exactly the way i feel because it makes me uncomfortable and because of past experience i don't know if some of those people would care or just think im over dramatic or crazy. I'm 17 year old female living in Utah just about to be a senior in high school. I've been feeling depressed for a long time, and tried a counslor. It didnt help at all because i think i am past the point of knowing what is making me depressed. I want to try anit-depressants but i am too nervous asking my parents if i can see a doctor for it. Usually, im too emotionally exhausted to even talk about it even if it'd help, i dont care enough. But occasionally i want to express myself and this helps. Thanks.

Hi Liveyoung000,

Welcome to the depression forum. What about trying counseling again, maybe with a different counselor. Maybe the counselor you had wasn't for you and you didn't get anywhere. Or talk to your parents and tell them you want a check up and bring it up during your check up. That is if you can't tell them that you want to get on medication or get help.

Teenage depression can be hard because it is hard to talk to the adults that you need to. But counseling would also be a way to go because they would help you get a doctor that would get you medication if that is what you need. I guess that you are taking the right steps because you are here. It is a start. I will post some teen sites that might also be helpful.

I hope that these are of some help to you.

I can relate a little to you LivingYoung, I was depressed in High School as well and my mom was not not supportive. But...I was able to stick it out and get some help. I agree that I wouldn't give up on counseling. You have to find the right fit. Sometimes it might take several tries to find someone who is perfect for you. What I did find in my young age though, was when I did step forward and talk to my parents about it. My dad was also depressed and on medication. You may be surprised how much you have in common. And if you are afraid to come forward and talk with them about it, these are things that you could brainstorm about with your counselor, how to bring this up, maybe it would be possible to invite your parents to come to a therapy session with you and you could have the moral support of your counselor. Don't give up. You are so young and have amazing opportunities in front of you. And welcome. I'm new today too and really don't know how to use this thing yet. :)

Hey Liveyoung, welcome to the site and I'm really glad that you found your way to us. I know all too well and personally about depression, disconnection, and the lack of understanding from the people around you. I have felt this way for the majority of my memory, I am 24 now, and I have only in the past week finally gotten the courage...or motivation...or whatever it is that you need to do something that you're afraid of...to actually go and see a doctor(made a post about it). I can tell you this for sure, you will be SO so relieved when you do tell your parents exactly how you feel, and when you are finally up to seeing a doctor. You most certainly may have some things that need working through...but you are only adding to them by not addressing them. Hehe, if you think that leaving a message on this forum made you feel a tiny bit better, if for no other reason than to get things off your chest, just imagine when you are talking directly to an understanding, knowledgeable, and helpful professional. I know you have it in you to get to that point, as other have said, maybe your school counselor can help to get you there. My honest suggestion, if I were you, knowing what I know now...I would not add the extra stress of the "not knowing" and feeling exponentially worse by the day. Coming here is a great first step to where you want to be, all you have to do now is put your other foot on the next one, that is the only way to do it. I hope you feel better and are able to find a way to talk to your parents, and keep us informed as to how you're doing, you are never without people who care.

thank you so much for all the quick responses. It really has helped knowing that there are people that care and will talk to me and help even though you dont all know me personally. No one knows really how to help unless you've been there yourself, it really has helped just seeing the replies.
