I can't use the crisis intervention numbers because I don't have a phone but I do have access to the internet through a roommate's connection. I also have autism and find it incredibly difficult to talk on the phone in the very best of circumstances so even if I had a phone I could use, it wouldn't be of help. I have searched for free online crisis chats but all I've found is a load of scams and spam.

Please, can anyone direct me to a real, free crisis intervention chat?

I am autistic and suffering from PTSD due to sexual abuse and trauma. I have severe depression issues and panic attacks. I am having the kind of thoughts that make me realize I need help.

Hi Catalamity: I also tried to do some research for you. So far I have not found anything about free online psychotherapy. Just a reputable source for paid online psychotherapy. If myself or others are not able to find a free site for you, perhaps you could try contacting the paid site I was looking at. They may be kind enough to point you in the right direction. The site is as follows:

http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-mindfulness-approach/200911/online-psychotherapy-is-effective

....I wish you the best of luck. Meanwhile, please feel free to post here as well. Obviously we are not professionals but are a tight group of caring people. HealingWell has been my family for many years now.

What I'm looking for is the chat equivalent of a suicide prevention hotline. I've been having suicidal thoughts and I don't know what to do about it.

Some people have told me to go to a payphone and call a suicide hotline but I don't think it would help. I am terrified of talking on the phone. I know it's an irrational fear but it makes it no less real a fear. I'm classified as a high-functioning autistic but stress seems to drop my level of functionality immensely. I only ever communicate easily via chat or email in the very best of circumstances.

Others have suggested I get help from family but I'm an adult and my family has not stayed in contact with me. I am unemployed due to illness but I was turned down for disability because while I'm autistic and have PTSD, I'm not mentally retarded as well. I didn't apply because I'm autistic or because I have PTSD, I applied because I am physically ill (fibromyalgia and lupus) and unlikely to get better. I haven't seen a doctor in almost three years and I feel physically miserable most of the time. I don't qualify for medical assistance because I'm not a parent. Apparently a person only deserves help if they are fertile and have reproduced. I am neither.

How do you live if you are not working and can't get assistance?  Do you live with somebody who is supporting you?

When my husband didn't have any health insurance he talked to the doctor's office and they hooked him up with a program called tencon.  It meant ten counties.  There were ten counties in the program.   They ended up covering his doctor's visits and his prescriptioins.  But they didn't advertise this program, you have to inquire about it.

You need to see a doctor even if you have to make payments.  It is really important that you get your fibromyalgia under control.  I imagine you are in a lot of pain right now.  Reapply for your disability.  File under all your ailments.  You need to be your own self advocate as nobody else is going to do that for you.  Get in touch with mental health and see if they have any programs that you are eligible for.

For the kind of chat that you want, I suggest you google it and see if you come up with anything.  There are crisis lines and numbers that I will post for you.  But we are not allowed to discuss suicide here.  National Suicide Hotline
1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433)
This is a combined network of the Amerian Association of Suicidology, the National Hopeline Network, CONTACT USA, and many other organizations. Call are automatically routed to the nearest crisis center to the phone from which the call for help is placed.

Hello again, Catalamity.

I think I've done it!! I believe I've found a free website for you. It is as follows:

http://apps.rainn.org/ohl-bridge/

Hopefully, Karen (i.e. our moderator) won't mind me doing this (I'm not sure if this is against the rules), but here is a brief blurb about them that I have copied from their site to give you a little bit of info.

What is the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline?
The National Sexual Assault Online Hotline is a free, confidential, secure service that provides live help over the RAINN website.

Who should use the Online Hotline?

* Victims of sexual assault (whether their attack took place today or decades ago)
* Spouses, family members, and partners of victims
* Friends of victims

What services does the Online Hotline provide?

* Crisis intervention and support
* Answers to your questions about recovering from sexual assault
* Information about medical issues
* Explanations of the criminal justice system, and what to expect when you report the crime to the police
* Referrals to resources in your area
* Information for family and friends of victims

How does it work?
It works just like instant messaging. You'll go into a private session with a trained volunteer and communicate, live, by typing messages back and forth. The service is completely anonymous, and you do not have to give your name or any personal information.

Who provides the help?
Online Hotline services are provided by RAINN and local rape crisis centers across the US, with the help of hundreds of trained volunteers. All trained volunteers have successfully completed state-mandated training and receive ongoing supervision from their local center. Online Hotline supervisors monitor sessions for quality control.

Does the Online Hotline provide ongoing help?
The Online Hotline provides immediate crisis help and information about recovery and prosecution. If you need ongoing help, your trained volunteer will connect you to your local rape crisis center, which provides free individual and group support sessions and other services. You can always reach your local rape crisis center directly by calling the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1.800.656.HOPE.

Which web browsers will work with the Online Hotline?
One of the browsers below is needed to use the Online Hotline messaging service:

* Firefox (Windows or Mac)
* Opera 7+ (Windows)
* Mozilla (Windows)
* Internet Explorer 6+ (Windows)
* Netscape 6+ (Windows)
* AOL 9.0 (Windows)

We are working continuously to provide support for more browsers.

Good luck and let us know if there is any other way we can help you!

Catalamity,
Please understand that you would not be talking for more than a minute or so if you call a Suicide Hotline. They are not set up to offer counseling. They are set up to connect you with a live crisis center in your area. In fact, if all you do is call them up & tell them you are thinking of committing suicide, they will send a crisis team out to you without any other information.

I am assuming you say that you don't qualify since you're not a parent because you're not an adult. That's really the only reason why an ER can refuse you emergency help. US law requires hospitals to get help for anyone who walks in or calls up & says they are suicidal. Please do call either 911 or 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433). They will help you.

As far as disability, a lot of times it is easier to get approved for it if you apply with all your diagnoses -- fibro, autism spectrum disorder, PTSD, depression, etc. Once you are approved, you can use your benefits for whatever health conditions you have. If you are approved because of PTSD or depression, but mainly need insurance & benefits for fibro or lupus, you can use them to pay for treatment for your fibro & lupus. There are people at the hospital who can help you apply for benefits. If you can't pick up the phone, please get someone to take you to the ER & tell them what's going on. Even if you will never be able to pay ever, they MUST admit you or find another hospital that can admit you & transfer you there.

Hope that helps.

take care,
frances

Thank you for your help. I will try the
http://apps.rainn.org/ohl-bridge/ website.

Frances, I am an adult and what I meant by there is no help for non-parents is that, in my state, unless you are pregnant or already a parent, there is no assistance other than food assistance available. My parents discarded me over twenty years ago. I am able to stay with friends because my irregular help with rent and bills is better than no help at all. I earn a few hundred dollars a month from freelance writing and from online writing sites. I've applied for everything available in Michigan and I do not qualify for anything other than food assistance.

I was told I could not appeal for Disability unless I had new information. I can't afford a doctor so there is no new information. They have all of the information from my doctors. They claimed I was still able to perform my old job - my old boss strongly disagrees - no one will retain an employee who is sick or faints on the job like I did far too many times.

The ER does not treat ongoing illnesses, only emergencies - they stabilize you and tell you to see the family doctor you don't have and can't afford. Also, I am afraid of losing my freedom - getting institutionalized because I have no next-of-kin to speak for me.

I think in this situation you should take the help that you can get. check into that tencon I told you about. I am in Michigan too. And that is where the probram is. But you have to talk to your doc abou it so you may want to make an appointment and make payments on it. Or just call the doctor's office and inquire. You should qualify. That is the only option that I can come up with.

Best wishes, hugs, Karen

Calamity,
You wrote that you are suicidal. The ER will treat that. No, they will not do much for fibro or lupus but they will help you live long enough to get assistance with those other issues. And many hospitals will even connect you with a social worker who can continue to help you after you are released from the psychiatric facility.

Have you applied for Section 8 Housing? Housing & Urban Development should be able to help you get housing. I'm not sure what options are available in your state for insurance for people with disabilities, but I know many states do offer a very cheap option. For example, in Illinois people with disabilities can buy good insurance for as little as $2/month.

You said that you didn't report all your disabilities on your original application for SSDI. If that's the case, there is "new" information for them. Refile it with all your conditions. I've helped a number of people file for SSDI & refile for SSDI. There is no rule against re-filing. If you submit exactly the same information, you are likely to get denied again, but if you include additional information about the PTSD and severe depression that can be used to decide to approve you for benefits. It's true that Lupus is not usually approved & fibro is not easy to get approved for SSDI. But severe depression is one of the easiest diagnoses to get them to approve for SSDI.

I hope that helps.

take care,
frances

Hi Calamity,
I read your very first post and the others loosely. I really wanted to email you but your profile did not provide one. Upon reading your post I saw an image of myself, I also have Aspergers and the problems associated with it. Also the other problems you mentioned.

I would really love it if you felt you may be able to email me, I am happy to read (the term every calls listening) but I really felt that (for both of us) knowing that there is someone out there who understands exactly and is in similar situation is helpful in itself.

Hope to hear from you!!

Hi Cat,

This site looks ligit and I liked the page on mistaken beliefs of depression.

http://serenityonlinetherapy.com/mistaken-beliefs.htm

Everyone has give you plenty of advice which, I don't have much to add to, so be safe and know that you can post here any time.

Just know that we can not talk about any self-harm or suicide intentions here on this forum. Thanks.
