I'm a 32 year old wife, mother, and full time online university student. In the last week, I've been feeling really down and unfocused on everything. I started my new classes last week and only did one assignment so far, which was an autobiography. I've always been an "A" student and don't want my mental state to be the downfall of my college career. I have a lot of anxiety, sleepless nights, and can't seem to focus on anything at all. I've also noticed that my patience is very low and have snapped at my husband and daughter a few times in the last couple of days. I love my family dearly and would never intentionally hurt them under any circumstances. I'm not a drug user and was never abused. I received therapy from the ages of 11-13, to which I was never diagnosed with depression or anxiety. I have no motivation and even stopped working out even after seeing good results. I feel like I'm sinking into myself and can't get out. What could be wrong with me and who should I ask for help? I'm in NYC if anyone has suggestions for help.

Hi Smokesgirl,

Welcome to the HealingWell Depression Forum!!!  I am so glad that you have found us.

I would recommend seeing your family physician first to make sure that there isn't anything physical going on.  Let him/her know how you are feeling and see what they can recommend.  You might just need some counseling, or you might need medications.  But something is amiss and I think that would be the best place to start.

Best wishes to you, keep posting and let us know how you are feeling.

Hi Smokesgirl

I would also like to welcome you to the Healing Well Depression Forum, you will find yourself amongst friends here who really do care.

You have a lot on your plate, I guess you know that already. You haven't said how old your daughter is but I am guessing she is only young. Does your husband help you around the house? Does he help with the shopping and cooking and preparing the meals? It is hard to be a full time online student and I think you have to be very focused and it is easy to be distracted.

Maybe something from your doctor would help you or maybe you could even stretch your course over a longer period, just a thought anyway. It sounds like you just have so much going on and things are pretty hard for you. If he doesn't already, I would be asking your husband to help more around the house, try not to to take too much out on them though, try and think before you speak, which is easier said than done, I know that only too well.

I guess the thing you probably have to remember is that the situation you find yourself in now won't last forever, as soon as you are finished your study you will no doubt reap the benefits.

I wish you good luch with your studies and I also hope you will keep posting to let us know how you are doing.
Kind Regards
