Hi all,

I am new here. I am having such a hard time. I suffer from depression and anxiety and have for the past 19 years. Most of the time I do okay but lately it has seemed so hard to get by. My daughter and I are not getting along and it is killing me. She is 21 and thinks the world revolves around her so when I have a problem it feels like she could care less. I am lucky that I have a wonderful husband who tries to help and a great counselor and psychiatrist but just don't feel quite right. Help?????

Fran

Hi Fran,

Welcome to the forum, I added a subject to your post so you will receive more replies.

The good news is that you are staying on the right track with the doc and therapist. Wonderful.

21 years olds usually know more than anyone else in the world, that is just how life is. It is a growing thing. I am sorry to hear that you have to go through this. Most children know more than there parents until they hit around 25 I think.

I do not have children myself, but I would like to offer the suggestion of mindfulness or focusing for you to keep centered in the now and not forecast the future.

Mindfulness.org is a good place to start.

Other people will post that have children and give you more insight, just remember to keep the lines of communication open to your daughter.

Stay strong and keep posting we are here to support and listen.

Hi Fran,

And welcome to the depression forum. Try to focus on the positive more than the negative in your life right now. Take solace in the fact that you have a good support system. You are probably right about your daughter, and I bet that she doesn't even realize how she is making you feel. Maybe talk to her about it. At that age, I think that young adults are really only focused on what is going on with themselves. I don't think that they mean it, it is just that way. Know that as she matures, she will probably be more aware with what is going on with you.

Try to stay mindful and in the moment. It really does help. Walk if you can. It is such good therapy.

I hope that you continue to post. Know that we all care about you.

Hugs, Karen
