Welcome Tracy!!

Wow, sounds like you have done a lot to try and lose some weight. I just want to give you a huge pat on the back for all your effort!! I recently read something (I wish I could find it) about the difference in how our bodies metabolize food if we begin our meal with something raw. It has to be the first bites. You can eat carrot or celery sticks or a piece of tomatoe etc . . . but it must be raw. I just started trying this a couple days ago. But it has something to do with the secretions in your stomach.

Keep us posted!!

Blessings!

Hi Everybody! Thanks for your input! Great website!
I have the oppostie problem with zoloft. I had been on zoloft for 3 years, for depression, mainly menopausal. I just got off zoloft now for about a month, and I gained 25 pounds!!!! I am beside myself! I felt ok, maybe a liitle blue, but started taking St Johns Wort. I am gaining weight like crazy. I cant remember where I read it, but it said that zoloft acts on the brain, to give you serotonin, which stops you from eating. Has anyone out there had this problem? I am desperate for info about this.

Painterly123..I'm with you! I never really gained weight while on Zoloft, which I took for almost 9 years. I've been off Zoloft 100mg for a month now and suddenly developed a voracious appetite. This is so unlike me. The anxiety and intense outbursts of anger are bad enough but add on wanting to eat everything is awful. And I am not in the habit of exaggerating. I have always been health/food disciplined, I work in the fitness industry..but as of late? I can't seem to control it.

Hi PetroA - I wanted to Welcome you to Healing Well forum.  I hope that you are able to find the answers and support that you seek here.  We have a whole lot of kind and caring people always willing to help.

I was on Zoloft for several years and gained several pounds while on it.  I also noticed that I could eat non stop and never really get full.  However, I was also like this on two other antidepressants.  I am on Effexor Xr now and dont feel like this and havent gained any weight on it either.  Everyone reacts differantly to these medications.  You may want to discuss this with your physician if you feel that it is something that is uncontrollable.
Take care and keep posting....

Hello Els and thank you :-) .  I will certainly keep you posted on how I'm making out..[and keeping the effexor xr in mind]. I have a doctors appointment next week, so we'll se how that goes.  It's truly nice to have a place to come to to express ones concernes, fears and frustrations. Unfortunately those who haven't been in this position can't fully understand... and [sometimes] understandably so.

confused  Painterly123, I'm kinda confused, are you saying that you gained your wait when you went off the zoloft and you think your still gianing becasue of the St Jonhs Wort?  The reason I ask is that my daughter started St Johns about 2 weeks or so ago, she was also on zoloft and gained about 15lbs in a month or two, and probaly 5 before that.  She will have been off the zoloft for 5 months in the beginning of April.  Its been a very long hard battle of trying to lose this sudden weight gain.  She works out in the Am at six in the morining before school and then after she goes and works out a work out place.  She has also been watching her calorie intake much like a weight watchers, and has cut out all whites.  She went through terrible with drawls, and still has strong cravings for carbs and sugar!  When she was on the zoloft and after first coming off she complained alot about feeling hungry and never full, not quite as bad now, but still their!
We started the St JOhns for the reasons of mood swings and her not having alot of self worth and for all the reasons she was on the zoloft in the first place.  I can see a difference, we haven't had any crying or break  down episodes lately, smiling more agian which is great to see.  Have you noticed any difference in your self since you started it.  I really hope it dosen't cause weight gain for were trying to lose the other.  I have done alot of reading on it and I have only come across a couple that talk about gaining water weight????  Hope to read a post back from you soon!! :-)

A question for those taking st. johns wort, What is your dosage and is it a standardized extract?

about 6 years ago I started on zoloft and I gained atliest thirty pounds. I am not sure of the exact amount of weight gain was because it was a long time ago and I don't have a scale and I don't weigh myself very often. I haven't lost the weight yet. I have not dieted but there were months where I would get a great deal of exercise.

I was on 250 milligrams of zoloft.

jjjjj, She takes three capsules aday, which is about 300, they are little gel like capsules.  One with each meal, they recomend this.  Good place to read up about it is the web sight called Kelly's St. John's Wort pages for depression, very informative.  Good Luck!
