Hello all
As my title said, new to this site but not to depression and anxiety.  I have just entered my third episode of depression and anxiety in 7 yrs.  Mine is always triggered by major stress events in my life.  This most recent was finding out that my father may have skin cancer.  Just recently moved to the city I live in so of course have a new doc.  Basically went in and told him I have been down this road before and the last time the doc prescribed me paxil and lorazapam.  I was on 40 mg's of the paxil for 10 months.  This time, he decides to put me on Effexor and agrees to give me the lorazapam.  I am on day 3 of meds and of course still not feeling it yet.  The worst side effect is the massive headaches.  Anxiety levels not decreasing at all.  I am on a leave from work but am due to go back on Sunday.  (dont think that is going to happen).  Went to call the doc this morning and found out he is closed until 1pm on Monday.  I'll be darned if I am going to sit in an emergency room for 4 hours.
Anyways.  Hoping to meet some new people here and provide any insite I have into the whole experience to help others get through it.
Any thoughts or experiences on Effexor would be appreciated.

Hi fiesti -

Welcome to the Healing Well forum. I am so sorry to hear that you are going through so much right now. My father recently had a stroke and while he was in the hospital the doctors found cancer. Luckily, it was not cancer, it was a cyst, which was subsequently removed. He is actually coming home today. :) To me, the worst part was the waiting for a diagnosis. I mean once we got a diagnose we could begin to think in those terms and analyze the different treatment options, so my heart goes out to you during this time when time seems to stand still waiting to hear from your dad's doctors.

I have never taken any medications for my depression, so I cannot comment on that aspect of your post, but I would like to offer a suggestion. You may have already thought of this, but if not I'll add it just in case. If you feel that you do not want to sit in an emergency room, but still need to talk to your doctor, he should be able to be reached via his emergency number. Or if he is not on-call he should have another doctor covering for him. Perhaps, he/she can assist you.

My depression is also usually triggered by a major stress event. So, I understand some of what you are going through. There are a lot of caring and supportive people on this site, so please feel free to come and post here often.

I hope you start to feel better soon.

Hi fiesti,  Welcome to Healing Well forum.  This is a great place to come for support and or any questions.

I also take Effexor Xr for depression.  I was started at 75mg and my psychiatrist has steadily bumped it up to 225mg in hopes that it will help keep my blood pressure up.  I can relate to the headaches though but they seem to come if I skip or am late taking a dose.

It will probably take a couple of weeks for the Effexor to get to its therapeutic level in your body.  As this is common with most antidepressants.  Hang in there....
