Hello everyone I am new to this forum! I have been depressed most of my life, usually on a cycical basis. Within the past few months I've dropped out of college and moved back home. At school and at my old apartment I constantly felt hopeless and on the verge of being suicidal. I was behind in all my classes and had a hard time finding a job, I was also frequently alone. Although I continued to take my meds they offered little releif and I spent more and more time at home asleep. I still sleep a lot now that I am at my parents house, but I don't feel worthless or hopeless like I did before. I have (with my Mom) been to community services for help, but I have shown little enthusiazm for change. I don't want another doctor giving me medication and assuming I will be automatically cured. It's just hard for me to be motivated when I don't see a whole lot to care about.

Hi Sherbert,  I wanted to welcome you to Healing Well.  You mentioned you went to community services?  That is a great step in the right direction toward rebuilding your life.  Also, doctors throwing meds at you all depends on what type of doctor you are going to.  If your seeing a PCP or regular doctor chances are they will just write your scripts and that will be all.  But if you see a psychiatrist then you will have some counseling or encouragement to do so.  Depression management is not just all about taking the meds, it is also about finding the root cause of the problem and identifying the triggers for depression and maintaining good health to ensure that it has fewer chances of returning.  In the end you are the only one who is able to do this not your doctor.  Healing Well is a great place to come if your looking for peer to peer support.  I hope that you continue to visit us.  Take care

sherbet, the way you described your depresion story its as if i was talking. i also was living alone then moved in to my parents and started to sleep a lot. i had to go through 4 doctors and i spent a month in the hospital. i was addicted to computer games.

the last doctor gave me the right medication, because after 4 weeks i was able to work and stop sleeping a lot and i do some excersize 3 times a week. he diagnosed me with bi-polar deppresion, the other doctors such treated me for normal depresion.

You have to keep trying don't ever give up on doctors, if one doesn't help you try another.
