This is just a curiousity question. I went out last weekend and had a couple beers.. just a couple. I haven't drank anything like that in years. I took my pain pill early, and didn't take anything else that night, all I had in my system was Zoloft. I know I DO have depression, relating to my chronic pain.
Anyway.. the day after, I didn't have a hangover or anything. But I was just annoyed at everyone, life, my computer..etc. Just really really cranky. I have gone without my pain meds and my klonopin many times, so I know it isn't that. I'm just wondering, since alcohol is a depressant, could that have caused my "mood" the next day?
I would enjoy getting back into life and have the ability to have a cold beer when I go out dancing, I've never been a big drinker but do enjoy one occasionally. I don't like being "held back" by anything..lol.
But I surely do NOT want to keep up the crankiness thing the next day everytime I do it. Just wondering if others get the same reaction.

Hi Sarah,

Nice to have you post here.
Alcohol isn't recommended when taking an antidepressant as alcohol is a depressant itself. It doesn't happen with everyone but I know that doctors don't recommend it.
I would maybe speak to your doctor about it and see what he says. I dont think there are any major contra indications of having a small amount of alcohol whilst taking an antidepressant, just that alcohol acts a depressant so it is not recommended.

Take care sarah, xx

Hi Ya Sarah, Nice to see you over here :-)

When I was on Zoloft I didn’t have much problem having a few drinks with it but as you said I certainly did feel it the next day.  In crankiness and almost an extreme hangover feeling that lasted the whole day...I have a fondness for margaritas...anyway, back then I wasn’t taking any other medications and my doctor said that small amounts of alcohol in moderation was not going to hurt me.  Now however, I take a fist full of drugs and have to avoid the alcohol.

Even though alcohol is a depressant, I would be more likely to lean toward thinking it was a mix of the Zoloft and pain med with the alcohol.  Perhaps if you are planning to go out or wanting to maybe try not to take the pain medication and see if that doesn’t make a difference.  Of course, as you know it isn’t good to mix these things and speaking to your doc maybe a good idea.

Take care

Elisha

I asked my pharmacist about the beer and zoloft... I've found the pharmacist to be more knowledgeable that my doc as far as side effects and interactions. He said a couple now and then should be fine (beers).. he said certainly not every day, nor a "binge" drinking night. I asked before I did it..lol. The pain med he said should clear my system in three/four hours since it's only 2.5mg of Lortab. That one I'm not too sure of, thinking it hangs around a little longer.
Maybe it was just the combo of pain from dancing and being out late, which I am not used to anymore. I did have such a good time though.. maybe I'll trick myself and drink non-alcoholic beer next friday..lol.
Thanks ya'll!!!
