When your anti-depressent stops working.. I am on Zoloft and have been since 1999. It helps with depression and IBS. Will it one day stop working? My dr. is thinking I will need something the rest of my life and just wondering if I can expect it to stop working one day?

Thanks.

Hi,
Psych meds are very different from anything else. They're designed to get into the brain and and add something that the brain may be lacking. Like Insulin. You always need to keep taking it 'cause your body doesn't make enough but you never become used to it and stop needing it.
It's the same principle, only it's more complex. 'Cause brain chemistry is very complex and is not yet completely understood.
So don't worry about that, be glad you have something that helps. If you have something that's worked for 7 years, i don't think you're going to have any problems.

If your medication isn't effective, you'll know it ... talk to your doctor if you are having a hard time right now, if things you managed well last month are totally unmanagable this month.  The chemical balance may have shifted and meds may need to be adjusted.  No need to anticipate this if life is going well for you on your current prescription.  If you start a downward slide then get help asap - no need to suffer.
