Hello everyone! :-)   I don't have depression per se but I do suffer from SAD.  I get depressed in the winter/early spring months here especially with the long stretches of cloudy snow/rainy days.  The rest of the year, I'm fine and my depression symptoms go away with the sunny months.  It seems the older I get the worse it is becoming and I have never been on medication for it in the past.  So my question to any of you that suffer from SAD and are currently on no medication for depression is....do doctors prescribed a short term anti-depressants for conditions such as this or do they not use the medicinal route with this but the sun lamps?  Is the use of short term anti-depressants safe?  I have never been to the doctor for my SAD and I haven't even been clinically diagnosed with it (I have all the typical symptoms though).  So I was thinking of going to the doctors (to get a proper diagnoses and help) because it's hitting hard and very early for me this year.  I just remember last year when it hit and I don't want to go thru those feelings again!  My heart truly goes out to anyone that has to deal with those feelings on a daily basis...it's rough thats for sure.

I wasn't sure if this is the right forum for a SAD question but I figured I had to start somewhere.  If it's not, can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks bunches........

Hi Sherry. I don't suffer from SAD, so can't help you there. Maybe the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome forum would have more info. I'm not trying to chase you away, pop in here any time. :-)

lol Jon, I didn't think you were chasing me away and that's why I asked if I was in the right forum. I'm not sure where my question would belong but thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Sherry, Your in the right forum tongue   glad to see you over here.  I dont have SAD but many people who post here do and it is very much a depression disorder.  I would certianly go and have it checked and properly diagnosed as you mentioned.  I worked in mental health for many years and know that psychiatrists do prescribe antidepressants for SAD.  It all depends upon the person and what they want to do but you can take an antid all year long, esp. since you already know that this is an ongoing problem for you each season.  This is will save you from having to stop and restart medications if that is the route your wanting to take.  There are many others who do the sunlamp thing and swear by them...but you have to be sure to stay on a schedule with a sunlamp I think?
I hope that you do get some responses from some members here that suffer with SAD soon.  Please do keep us updated.  Take care

Sherry, I have SAD also and as far as I know, doctors don't prescribe temperary meds. I would ask your Dr. because I am not a professional and he or she is. I'm just a guy giving his opinion, but seriously, SEE A DOCTOR! Sincerely, Chad. tongue

I'm finding that SAD is pretty common for many here on HW. I didn't know so many people actually had it. It's good to know that I didn't sound like a quack because SAD is just now getting the recognition of being a true condition and I wasn't quite sure how many actually had it.

I have a growing list of problems to take to my doctor so why not add one more eh? lol She once told me that I'm one of her more complicated patients so lets put it to the test :)
