Hi all,

My job is taking calls at a call center, and I really like the job normally, but there is one client we take calls for that really upsets me... It's for an "anxiety cure" from a "well known" person, I'm not sure if I dare mention the name. We are required at my job to read all scripts word for word, but this one is horrible. We have to ask people very personal questions about their mental health problmes, which I suffer from myself, and some of the callers start crying and are really sick, and then we have to try to sell them a REALLY expensive product. Most of the callers for this that I have spoken with are on disability and some are on the edge of a breakdown and have NO money, much less the amount that this product costs. I can really empathize with them, but I can't say that, or tell them about this website or anything else that could really help them. It has been hard for me to get through these calls, and I'm afraid I'm going to lose my job over this. When I applied for this job, I was required to sign a paper saying that I "may have to take calls which go against my values", and at the time, it never occurred to me that I would ever be forced to try to sell "anxiety cures" to depressed people. This really is upsetting me... any advice????

Tangerine,
I know how call centers work, and most of them are all about numbers.
I have a couple of suggestions, first would be maybe talking to a supervisor and explaining the situation. I would think that if it is affecting your health they would move you to a different account to handle.
Or,can you request a transfer to a different dept?
I know how important a job is,but if it is affecting your health I would consider the possibility of finding another job. I probably would not tell your customers about this site as you don't want to get in trouble.

Good luck

Hi Chad and Shynsassy,

Thank you for your replies. Yes Shyn, it's always all about the numbers. Thankfully, this is only one of many clients we take calls from, and hopefully, with the weekend over, these calls won't be coming in so often. One of the supervisors helped me get through the most difficult call yesterday, and told me that we were taking the overflow of those calls from another site yesterday. When I was leaving, he confided that he is also going through a lot of emotional issues right now because of his mother's failing health, so he completely understood how difficult it is for me to take those calls.... unfortunately, the "grading" of our calls is done in a different city, so if someone listens to those calls and doesn't approve of how I was handling it, I could be in some trouble (though I don't feel I did anything wrong). I was actually on a different project for the last 4 months or so, but it was a temporary project. :( It's only my first week back on this, and before my temporary project, we weren't taking calls from this client...

Unfortunately, if I told anyone about this site, I think I would be fired because this client offers online "support".. I'm sure they should at those prices!!

Take care,

Bear
