Firstly I'd like to say hi. I'm new to posting on this forum, although I do post regularly on the Crohns disease forum.

I was wondering if I could ask you guys a little advice? I have suffered from moderate depression on and off for about the last 15 years, but more so since my crohns diagnosis 10 years ago. I have often had spells where I have had to take fluoxetine, combined with counselling from a community psychiatric nurse. I have managed to stay off the fluoxetine for the last 3 years, and also haven't needed counselling. However after going through a very very stressful year last year, and having a nasty flare up for the last 6 months I am really feeling very low, and feel that I may need to start taking medication again.

The reason I am putting this off is, my husband and I are trying for a baby, and I am concerned about taking more medication whilst trying. I was wondering whether anyone out there knew of any medications that are ok to take whilst trying to conceive, or pregnant?

Thanks in advance, I appreciate you taking the time to read my post

Hi Jas
how exciting to be trying for a baby! And you should be very very concerned. You need to contact your doctor,or you can simply walk into a pharmacy and talk them. Just be very very careful. Hopefully some other members on here will have some ideas...the last time I had to worry about meds/pg was 17 years ago,so I am of no help on that.
I hope someone on here will have some ideas.

Good luck

Hi Jas, Welcome to the depression forum, glad to have you.  I spent many years working in the mental health field and am familiar with almost all the antidepressants/psychotropic medications on the market.  Except for Lexapro and Cymbalta which are the two newest medications out...I can’t speak for.  I can say that most usually a psychiatrist would hold off on giving any medications for someone who is pregnant until after their 3rd month as there is no data wither or not they effect the development of the fetus.  I have seen antidepressants prescribed after the 3rd month for those who really need it.  You can ask your OB doctor what medications you can continue to take and what you have to stop.

I recall when I was pregnant 3 yrs ago I was told to stop all my medications by the OB doc.  I have MS and take several meds for that and I was also taking Zoloft at the time.  I ended up miscarrying at 12 weeks but it was just as well as I cant imagine trying to take care of a child with all the health problems I have now.  Anyway, please do let us know how it goes and what you do find out.

Hi, Welcome to the forum, we are happy to have you and so excited for you, trying for a baby.

Shy and Els are right, talk to your doctor about this as you need to be very careful.  I know one of our members here is pregnant and I think she takes meds so I am going to ask if she will post here if she has any info.

Take care and let us know what your doc says.

Take care....oh....and remember to take folic acid!

Thank you all for your responses, and your lovely welcome :-)

I'm going to try and manage it naturally for the moment, after talking to my husband tonight. He just wants me to feel ok, so will support me whatever I need to do, but I feel personally that I am still at the stage where I can manage ok with the meds (I think, I hope!) I'm going to try and up my physical activity, get the endorphins going, and make some changes to my diet (cut out processed foods etc etc). I will definitely stay on this forum too, even just getting it off my chest today has helped a bit.  I truly think the stress of trying for a family for over a year has taken its toll on me too, so talking it though is bound to do some good

And Bam, an enormous congratulations on your pregnancy :-)   What a wonderful thing to look forward to

With my first child (10 years ago) i was put on an anti-depressant during the second half of the pregnancy, don't remember which one, but my son is fine. And with my daughter who will be 3 in 3 weeks, I was on a low dose of Effexor XR throughout the entire pregnancy and afterwards. She is just fine. I know you've made your decision for now, but I just wanted to add some reassurance to those who have already posted. In particular, I'd be more vigilant after the pregnancy because if you already suffer from some depression, you could be more prone to Postpartum Depression. I know I went through it very badly with first child because I went off the anti-depressant for financial reasons. With my daughter, I never went off my medication, during or after, and I credit it partially for the fact I didn't go through PPD the second time. So I just wanted to add that for something for you to think about when you do get pregnant, and for anybody who is pregnant reading this post for information purposes.

Good luck.
It would be easier to tell people I have cancer than it is to tell them I am severely depressed.....
