Hello Everyone,
I posted a while back about my brother. He was in hospital for the past 6 weeks where he received ECT regularly. He came home yesterday and is still talking about suicide. The doctor told me that recovery would take time, but I am wondering if he would be better off in hospital where he can be supervised till his mood is considerably better. He lives together with my elderly parents and I believe he would be better off in hospital till we see some visible improvement. I would really appreciate other peoples' thoughts on this. eyes eyes eyes

The docs are right - recovery does take time but I am suprised that they have sent him home when he is still having suicidal thoughts. Have you been in touch with the docs yourself about this?

Hi Victoria,
Thank you for replying so quickly. My brother came home for 1 day last week. For the first hour at home he was very distressed, but he then settled down. He has only been home for a couple of hours and when I spoke to him he seemed down and expressed verbally that he questioned the value of living. I asked he if he would prefer to be back in hospital and he said ,"no". I think I need to give him a couple of days at home to see how he adjusts. It is just that I would have preferred if his mood had stabilized before he was sent home. The doctor told me that he would be up and down; it is just that it is very distressing when he gets really down and who knows how long it will take till his mood stabilises!!! sad

The doc is right - it is normal to be up and down with depression. It really is like a rollercoaster. Does he have any outpatient care eg. a community psych nurse or anything that you can call if needs be?
I hope he adjusts ok to being back at home. Give him time and you will see an improvement Im sure. When I left hospital after 4 months, it was hard to get abck into home routine again.

I am sorry to hear about your brother. Outpatient care made all the difference between relapse and recovery for me once I got out of the hospital. Also, spending time in nature.
