Hi there and Welcome to HealingWell!

The dosages of 5-HTP vary from person to person based on a lot of things such as weight, gender, level of depression etc... so advise regarding the dosage is difficult. Have you spoken to a physician about this? I havn't used it myself but a member of my family has and found it to be very effective. They found that it was helpful as it allowed them to go through therapy much easier. Hopefully there will be others out there who will share their story.

I hope you find the support you are looking for here and that everything works out well with your 5-HTP. Let us know how you get on

Still looking for anyone that has used 5-htp. I have heard very good things about it helping depression and anxiety without as many side effects as other drugs. Anyone that can tell me how it works for them and how much do you take would be helpful. Thanks

Hi, I am new to this forum also.

Just to let you know that I started taking 5-htp yesterday after a little research on the net. Firstly, yes there are a lot of people on the net who have got a lot of positive results from 5htp. However, the majority of researchers seem quite cautious with no one sure what dose to take and with experts contradicting themselves on the effectiveness/longevity of it. You do have to think that it is not available on prescription(here anyway) although maybe in time it may be.
Me personally, I decided to give it a go. I took 100mg 1hr before I went to bed. Now despite 5 having fewer side effects than other more popular anti-depressants I was shocked how it effected me. My stomach felt a little uneasy although nothing to write home about. I suffered from some sleeplessness although just lying in bed was very pleasant. A kind of all over warm glow and feeling relaxed. When I did sleep dreams were very vivid. In the morning I was woke by my daughter and actually felt at first like I had had a good nights sleep at first. Then a couple of hours later I went really tired again and my mood slumped. I am currently resisting having another tablet until tonight when I will just have 50mg.

I have now been on 5htp for a week now however after doing research I only take 50 mg between 12-2 pm as I have read about many that had some issues with taking it at night. For a little while it did give me slight nausia. Like you said. Nothing to write home about.

The main benefits of the 5-htp will not show for 2-6 weeks. I think taking 50 mg to start and staying on it for weeks then deciding if I should move the doseage up is the best plan as taking 100 mg is still not a lot but if 50mg helps build some saratonin up then it will help.

If you want to take 100 mg seperate the doses into 2- 50 mg doses is my suggestion.

Nature's Way makes a brand with enteric coated tablets that might help with stomach issues.
If you want a more immediate effect and energy boost add some Rhodiola Rosea. Rhodiola can lift your mood within just a few days. I have seen formulas with both Rhodiola and 5-HTP so they're apparently safely used together.

ok. just an update since last comment and some advice if possible. Still got the nausea almost 24 hours on but that is not the problem as it is very mild. My mood has however slumped and I am feeling a lot worse than before I took the tablets. about ten years ago when I had my only other period of noticeable depression my g.p prescribed seroxat and I can remember feeling exactly the same then. The question is do I carry on or give it up as a bad job. I gave up seroxat after two days.

I think the important thing to remember is (as many people before me have said) that AD's take 4wks+ to have their full effect. You might find that the side effects are only temporary and your mood will lift. My advice would be to stick with it for at least 4 wks.

Ok, further update. These are not for me. Last night I can remember three seperate dreams which were so vivid it was uncomfortable. The first was a job interview from hell which I knew all the time I was not going to get. The second was a friend and I getting attacked in the city and then arrested. The third was being in a nuclear attack(due to a film I was watching before I went to bed I presume). I have researched the net and they do work for a lot of people but becareful. Follow the instructions to take a break every couple of months because people have trouble coming off them Good luck

Im sorry that you dont feel the 5HTP is for you. I thought maybe you'd found something that was going to work for you. My personal opinion is to give them 4 weeks as some of the side effects may fade, but it is your decision and you know your body better than anyone else. You know if it is right for you or not. Hopefully there is a different med out there for you.
