Hi all,

Ok Iv asked this before but with doc's orders we have talked extensively he wants me to try cymbalta 20mg and I take 10mg of elavil at night its ok but just get soooooo groggy in the am. not really helping the depression part but somewhat with ibs and some small amount of pain, i know none of you are docs but any of you been on both types of ad's or similar? The intent probably is to get me more on cymbalta but he did not want me to stop the elavil right away since in most people doc said cymbalta kinda keeps you away any responses would be appreciataed. Thanks!

Hey jonny,  I was on Elavil for a short period of time.  It didnt work so well for me so I went off of it.  It is an old drug and can be used for many differant disorders other than depression.

I think following your doctors recommendation is most usually the best choice in these matters.  They are the ones who are up on current meds and hopefully, will be able to prescribe the best med to work for you.

Hi Els,

Thanks for getting back to me, As I said before I am following docs orders and mine is really good on keeping up with new meds and old ones etc.  I know the elavil is prescribed for many other disorders and I was put on it mostly for ibs, and other things and of course being on that low of a dose (10mg) is not gonna do much for depression. ANyways are you on something else if you dont mind me asking? I will give the cymbalta a go and hopefully will help alot.

Thanks Jonny

Jonny

how long have you been taking both? Maybe it's side effects that will wear off?

I take amitriptyline for chronic pain and bentyl for IBS. At first it felt like I was walking thru molasses most of the time, especially in the mornings I was so drowsy, but this has started to wear off (its been about 2 weeks). Now I get a good nights sleep and although it still takes me a bit to get started in the am, I think its worth it.

Have you asked your doc about the sleepiness?

Hi , Acutally let me be frank here Im still on 10mg of elavil at night and my reg. doc wants to try cymbalta along with it to maybe help pain and depression because obviously the little elavil Im on does nothing for depression which I know So I have not started the cymbalta yet Im awaiting my ins. to approve it (long story) then I can but should be by the end of this week.  I just get so frightened with cymbalta Iv read so many "horror" stories but I know NOT to believe everything I read, and just bite the bullet and go for it,

Iv been on elavil for 2 months now just sooooo groggy in the am .  Doc said too this would wear off and I do have to take lomotil for ibs/gallbladder being removed.  Im on other meds too for other health probs such as thyroid / lupus in some ways I like the elavil gosh I get a GREAT sleep!  Sorry to go on and on here but this board seems so knowledgeable and helpful helps me. I will say I FINALLY after 7 yrs . of diagnosis thyroid/lupus I admitted I was not only in pain alot and did not want to do pain killers but I was depressed and you know your brain does get "sick" as the rest of your body so that helped me just in itself.  So anyways Im on the 'fence" here my doc is very supportive and will do anything to help me so that helps.

Tx Jonny btw Im female and in lovely menopause NOT!!!
