I'm a TERRIBLE sleeper, runs in the family. I have a super hard time getting to sleep, and then once I get to sleep its a challenge staying asleep.

I've found that ambien works wonders - 15mg per night (I see a sleep specialist). However, my insurance doesn't want to pay (of course).

Any suggestions for sleep medication?

kwlulu24:

My wife is the exact same way - Ambien is the only thing that has ever worked for her. We just found out a month or so ago that there's a generic Ambien now on the market and her insurance is covering it after a few phone calls and persistence. We had some people (including a pharmacist) tell us that it wasn't on the market yet...it absolutely is, so if you get the runaround from doctors or insurance people, keep pressing.

Hope that helps,

Rick...

Rick - I forgot to mention I'm taking the generic and the insurance still doesn't want to pay! Does your wife take a higher than normal dose? The normal is 5-10, I'm on 15-20 - and the thinking is due to my Crohns disease thats why i need a higher dose of everything

Hey kwlulu 24,

I'm experiencing some insomnia right now too...The best med I've ever had for sleep is Trazodone, you should ask your doctor.  It has antidepressant properties, and I confirmed with the experts that there is no risk for dependency.  That was also proven by my personal experience, I never ever got addicted to it, took it for years off and on as I needed it.

Might be going back on it soon if I don't start getting some sleep.

Take care.

Hi Kwlulu

My hubbie suffers from terrible insomnia also, has done all his life but the past 6 months have been really bad. He has tried lots of over the counter remedies none of which ever had any effect even when tripling the dosage. So his doc has just prescribed him Seroquel which is working wonderfully for him in this short space of time. He is only taking 25mg but has slept peacefully for the past week and the big thing is that he has woken up feeling fine the next morning. He hasn't felt drowsy or like a bit of zombie which some of the other stuff made him feel. So obviously this is only his experience but it is currently working for him.

Hope you find something as the lack of sleep really does make life ten times harder

:-)
