Hi everybody,

I have been diagnosed to have stress induced peripheral neuropathy about a week ago. I have been stressed out lately coz i thought i had contracted HIV, But the HIV DNA PCR test at 26 days ruled out the presence of the virus in the blood. Moreover, my risk was analysed as pretty low risk.

I've also developed what i hope will be temporary -- IBS.

Well i got my blood sugar tests, they have come back normal!

But i have severe signs of neuropathy. Stinging pain in the feet & arms with numbness. Yes i agree i have a lot of stress, & i smoke a lot!

What i really wanted to know is whether stress is a documented cause of peripheral neuropathy?

Chinesefood,
I found some very interesting info on the web...looks like stress has alot to do with your symptons...check these out.
I would contact your doctor right away and see what can be done about it.

I am over in crohns, but I saw this and just had to ask what are your b-12 levels? I noticed that you have IBS and you may not be absorbing b-12 which does cause neuropathy. If this is the problem then you might need prescription strenght b-12, because the oral route doesn't work when compared with the shot or sublingual (under the tongue).  As you can see in the links that Shy gave you that it is important to get this figured out.

P.S. Shy, you rock!  That is some awesome info!  Thanks!  Sorry if I stepped on toes.

Hi All, Thank you for these responses & must say the links were quite informative!

Mainly as i said i do have a lot pf stress especially coz of work overload & the HIV thing really added to it. Have you guys ever heard if peripheral neuropathy has occured, or occurs generally so early if indeed i was infected with HIV??? Most of the experts on the HIv forum did empasise that my risk was pretty low & secondly that Hiv related PN occurs generally only in the late stages of HiV infection, once the immune system is quite compromised??

Your thoughts on these would certainly make me stronger....I have a confirmation test in a few weeks....Yes the medication has made me feel better.....but the symptoms are there , though now less intense!
I've got my chopsticks back, Just wanna make sure i eat the right stuff :) haha!

Hi chinesefood!

I just registered. I came across your message about stress induced neuropathy.. First of all, how are you doing right now? I hope you are better.

I am in a similar situation right now...I have been in a lot of stress for the last 8 months or so..and a month ago I started having shooting sensations on my arms and legs which last for a few seconds. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia which my doctor said is stress induced. I was just thinking of the neuropathy if it could be stress induced too..

I will look forward to your reply..thanks a lot!

would like to know if depression makes it all worse.   I use to have a b-12 shot evry month, I think I need to go back to it.

Hello academia

I want to join Karen in welcoming you to HealingWell.  You may want to start a new post as chinese has not been on the boards for almost a year and I am sure if you start your own topic you will find the current members to be very  friendly and positive.
Again a warm welcome.

I am going through the exact same thing Chinese food. Doctor ruled out HIV by PCR DNA test at 28 days but I still have numbness, tingling, calf soreness and cramps, and weird muscle twitches. I WAS SO STRESSED about HIV so I could have the PN from that.... I had what seemed like the flu or bad IBS for about a week and lost a ton of weight (mainly muscle from my arms, neck and legs).

I was hoping that this message would still reach you because I am very curious as to what the doctors were able to do for you. Did you try the B12 thing? Anyway, thanks everyone for posting.

I have never been diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy. I think I have it because of the numbness, burning,
stinging, prickling, firey feelings I feel in all levels of my back and shoulders.
I take prescription Vitamin B called Folbee tabs. I guess they're pretty strong.
Does anyone have PN that sounds like what I described?

I have been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, mine is exactly the same, I have pain in the small and ring
finger of each hand and tingling and pain in my feet. I was also under a lot of stress for a number of years and
now I am suffering both Fibro and chronic fatigue and depression. My Vitamin B12 is normal and Im not diabetic.
I have never smoked or drank, and was always healthy. I don't understand how stress can cause neuropathy, does anyone know how? I became ill after a flu like illness 4 years ago, I do know that lyme disease which is transmitted by deer ticks can cause these problems too. I have had elisa and western blot tests but they came back negative. I also know that CJD and MS can cause these symptoms too. I have had neck problems in the past which can also sometimes cause nerve entrapment. I have had a nerve conduction test which proves that my ulnar nerves are damaged (in hands) I am really desperate to understand why my health is suffering this.
I am a 44 year old man, so again I am not a usual patient type. Thanks to everyone Dave

Hi chinesefood,

I have just joined the forum so that I can reply to this topic.

I was wondering if, as your user name suggests you like chinese food because it very often contains a lot of MSG (monosodium glutamate) which I am sorry to say has often been linked to peripheral neuropathy and multiple sclerosis:

Hi Gainsbourg,

I just want to welcome you to the HealinWell depression forum. This is a wonderful place to come if you are experiencing depression or if you have in the past. All of the members are so kind and compassionate.

I don't know if you will get an answer to your reply because this is an older thread. People come and people go. But if there is anything that you would like to talk about, feel free to start a thread of your own.

Sincerely
Karen

Hi all,
I've also been very stressed that I had contracted HIV. It's been six months since I started going "crazy". I developed peripheral neuropathy around november. Till today I have been feeling all the symptoms, burning, glove hands and cemented feet, needles and pins. So I decided to go for the test today and HIV1 and HIV2 came out negative. No diabetes either...so yes the sub-conscious mind is that powerful. Please test, the mind will make u sick if u don't. And it's the only way to know if u have the virus or not.

God Bless,
Favoured.

Peripheral neuropathy is not a small problem.....It leads to symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, burning, and weakness most commonly affecting the hands and feet....it can damage our nerves system...I am trying to find a natural treatment for this which is safe to use and free from any harmful side-effects or interactions.....
