I just recently found this message board.  I have been diagnosed with depression and have been given Wellbutrin XL.

I am 43 year old female and wonder if any of you that might take it "alone" with no other prescriptions how you feel the medication works.  I have read horror stories on side effects but do you think if I give it enough time it will finally work?

I have taken many other prescriptions and had no luck.

Thanks to any that can give me any information.

Hi I have been taking Wellbutrin XL for many years now and it does help. The only thing is it doesn't help your brain release serintonin (bad speller) so sometimes you also have to take another antidepressivewith it. Usually the combination helps a lot. I have had no side effects at all from it.

Hi Peach
Welcome to the forum,I am very glad that you found us. I was on Wellbutrin for about 2 years, and I too had to take it with a different antidepressant. If you find it is not working then I would contact your doctor right away.

Im glad someone else is finally posting about wellbutrin, no one responded really to the one i made. I just started taking it less than a week ago, I feel some slight side effects but nothing too annoying...I don't know if its a fluke but I'm in a pretty good mood today and I haven't been for quite some time, don't know if it kicks in that quick. I also take 1 klonopin at night for anxiety which my doctor suggested because wellbutrin on its own might actually cause anxiety. I hope it works well for you!

Well my biggest fear is over.  I took my first pill this morning and I don't feel any different.  I was most worried about the
side effects of nausea and headaches but so far so good.  I realize it's too early to tell but I am praying that this is the pill that is going to work.

I am supposed to increase to 300mg from 150mg daily in 3 days but I'm going to wait for a few weeks and see how I do at the 150mg.

Thanks again,
Patty

I'm on my 5th day of Wellbutrin XL at 150mg....I'd really love to know how others are doing on this drug...I think I started to feel some help starting yesterday. Something pretty stinky happened and I didn't cry my eyes out all night because of it like I usually would. I think I'm gonna wait longer than my doctor recommended tho before I move to 300mg's, maybe another week.

Hi,
That is a high dosage, but if you still don't feel right then call your doctor right away,he might want to give you something to go with the wellbutrin.....

Most anti depressants take 4-6 weeks to take full effect.
If you can hold out that long, then hopefully you will feel the full effects of the med.

i also take anti-anxiety (klonopin) at night which my doctor recommended to balance out the wellbutrin...i read that 300 is the regular adult dosage but do most people stay at 150?

I would trust your doctor at this point. I know you are worried about the dosages, but if you find that after a few weeks it is not working, then give your doctor a call.
I was on the 300mg,and it worked fine for me. Everyone handles meds differently.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

Thanks shy...I actually got in touch with my doc last night and he said that I should go back to the 150...I guess he thought my side effects were too much? I have an appt with him on Thursday.

Peach,
One day at a time,I am glad that you are not experiening any side effects. Just remember it can take 4-6 weeks for the meds to take full effect. Keep us posted

Hi all.  I'm new here.  I have been taking Wellbutrin for a while now.  But my Dr. is switching me t o Lexapro.  Although it greatly improves my mood, it makes my anxiety much worse.  I can barely tolerate 150 mg.  I've tried taking at different times but no luck.  My hands actually shake while on this med.  I heard this is really rare, so you probably won't have this problem.  But good luck!

i am just gonna add to what everyone else is saying! i took welbutrin and had to take paxil in addition. for me personally, the welbutrin made me feel quite edgy...i switched to cymbalta and thats not working all that great so my doc has added lamictal. it just wasn't right for me -- b/c anxiety is my problem and that is a side effect. i also cycle quite quickly, which is a another story for another day!!!

I have not been feeling edgy at all from the wellbutrin but I am only on 150mg...I think the klonopin I take at night makes a big difference, maybe you could ask your doctor about that?

I have been taking Wellbutrin for about 3 years now and it has probably saved my life. Not that I still don't have my ups and downs, but twice during the past 3 years I thought I was well enough to not have to take any medication but I was wrong and started back on the medication again and I realized how much it helps me. My only bad side effect is weight gain.

Well, I am new to this and wanted to join in.  I was diagnosed with depression in 2000 and was in therapy and took meds until 2/2006.  I was doing well until last month when I started some self-harming behaviors and was feeling terrible.  Now I am back in therapy and on Wellbutrin.  I feel better but have has three nights where I cannot sleep.  The first  night was an isolated incident and the next 2 nights occurred consecutively.  Has anyone else experienced this specific side effect?  I am asking because I am not sure if it is even a side effect....or just my depression but I have never had a problem sleeping in my life!  Any insight would be helpful.

Jenni,

Hi! I am new to this board too. about two weeks or so, I stumbled upon tha board. I, too, and on wellburtin alone. I am on 150mg total, with 75 in the morning and 75 at night. Anyhow, I started on 75mgs in the morning and before I upped the dose i had horrible side effects. They started to go away two days before the dose went up. I started to take that second dose on monday, and its just as bad as it was in the beginning, and I feel much more depressed now than I ever have before. I talked to my doctors office, and the swear that it will go away, but if i feel worse to come in. I feel weird, like you said. I am also sooo tired, and yet I cant sleep. I am also dizzy, I get blurred vision, headaches, double vision, trouble retaining information, trouble concentrating, and my cooridnation is off. Basically, i'm getting most of the side effects. I do not feel better, I feel worse. And I dont really want to be on the medicine. However, you cant wean yourself off of it.

Hope you feel better.

Hey, I tried the Wellbutrin for 7 weeks and did not have any side effects but it did not help me.  What kind of side effects have you heard about?

Hi there.................this is Kitt and I will post the most common SE of Wellbutrin XL...............this is FYI only and each person should be working with their own physician re all and any of your meds.

The common adverse effects associated with 12-hour sustained-release bupropion (Wellbutrin XL)) are dry mouth, nausea, insomnia, tremor, excessive sweating and tinnitus.

The development of mild to moderate skin rashes is associated with sensitivity to dye components within the pill coating. This can often be alleviated simply by prescribing a differently colored pill.

Seizure is the most controversial side effect of bupropion, and was responsible for its initial withdrawal from the market. The risk of seizure is highly dose-dependent and is a subject to discuss with your Physician.
Reference: Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

There is plenty of info available on Wellbutrin XL and your physician and pharmacist are your best source for more personal information as they know all the meds you take and what other medical conditions you may have.

It is wise to become an informed consumer.
Keep posting.
Kitt
