One,the zoloft will take 4-6 weeks to take full effect,I have heard that they are trying to be very careful with teenagers and taking anti-depressants due to the thoughts of harming themselves.

Did your son come home? here are some numbers that you can call and ask for help, they are trained to deal with situations like this, and hopefully you can convince your son to talk to them.
I would keep in constant contact with his doctor and keep a very close eye on your son. I am so sorry that you have to go through this!

Hi there,

I currently take Zoloft and it seems to work quite well for me, but as Shy has said it does take 4-6 weeks to work so you need to keep an eye on things until then. The helplines that Shy have given you are a great resource and I would take advantage of them. Please keep in contact with us and let us know how things progress. Perhaps your son would also benifit from joining?

Darren

Hi Shelter, I am so very sorry about your son.  You have gotten wonderful advice and suggestions from ShynSassy and Darren.  I just wanted to mention that if your son has changed from Effexor straight to Zoloft then it shouldn't take that long to reach therapeutic effect since he already has an SSRI in his system.

I wonder if you have considered inpatient treatment for him until he gets better or more stable?  I would be concerned that the local law enforcement came to take whatever weapons out of your house so that he wouldn't harm himself.  He wrote a note which shows intent and perhaps a plan to harm himself.  In addition to his being gone for so long without you having any idea where he is or what he is doing.  If you chose to put him into a hospital until he gets better at least you know he will be getting the right treatment and is in a safe environment.

Otherwise, as Shy said keep in close contact with his doctor.

I wish you both well....please keep posting and letting us know how he is doing.

Sorry to hear about the hard time with your son. I am a 40 year old male, live in the US, and have suffered from varying degrees of depression for quite a while, probably 10+ years. I am currently taking Zoloft and Wellbutrin and the combination works quite well for me. While I generally agree with the other comments, I wanted to throw in a couple thoughts.

First, the time it takes for Zoloft to become "fully effective" may indeed be quite a few weeks. However, everyone's body reacts differently to these types of medications. After the first or second dose of Zoloft, I felt a very clear difference in my mood. I woke up in the middle of the night and laid in bed talking with my wife for a couple hours and felt a calmness in my mind like I had never really felt before. For the next several days, I had some mood swings between simply feeling better (a lot less depression and anxiety) and totally goofy and giddy. Several times I found mildly humorous things to be hilarious and laughed until I had tears in my eyes! I also had quite a few times where I simply "blanked-out" in mid-sentence while talking to people and was frequently at a loss to verbalize or describe my mood level (probably because my range of emotions and feelings increased way beyond what they had been in the past). My psychiatrist thought that most, if not all, of these were normal reactions to Zoloft. After a few weeks or months, these things have mellowed-out considerably. However, I still feel way better and my range of feelings and emotions remains much wider than it was before.

Second, although I am not familiar with the healthcare and hospital systems in Canada, in the US one can go to the emergency room a hospital when they're depressed enough to be suicidal. In the Seattle area where I live, almost every hospital that has an emergency room also has psychiatric facilities and if a person is severely depressed and presents a harm to themselves or others, they can be admitted to the hospital against their will for 72 hours. If the admission is involuntary, an adult is entitled to a hearing with a judge before they can be held longer. The point is, suicidal thoughts and/or behavior should be taken quite seriously and it's sometimes necessary to force someone to get help.

My wife and her mother were worried about me a while back and thought I might harm myself (I wasn't even thinking about it at, but that's not the point). They sat me down and had a long chat with me. Although I didn't think it was necessary, I agreed to go to the emergency room at a local hospital. I was seen by a nurse, a doctor or two, and a social worker. The social worker and I had a very long chat that was actually quite beneficial to me and resulted in some major changes in how I managed my depression, anxiety, and PTSD. My medications were changed quite a bit, I actually want to see my psychologist/therapist every week, and I'm sleeping most nights. One thing I can say is that going to the emergency room scared the hell out of me and was a huge wake-up call.

So, you might want to check into the local hospitals and see what they have to offer for short term intervention as well as day programs for treatment of depression and medication management.

Good luck!!

I am so glad that he came home and is doing better.
I know that a child can really take us down, and as a mom you want to be able to fix him right away,so you are very frustrated.

All you can do is make sure you tell him everyday that you love him,and that you will always be there for him (which I am sure you already have) and then take it one day at a time.

The biggest step for him is asking for help....so by him taking the meds that is something he should be proud of.

Please keep us posted and stay strong.
