i've been very depressed for about 2 years and i can't help but feel hopeless all the time about everything. i've always thought of anti-depressants and thought that maybe if i was on them, i could be a little happier. im hesitant though because i heard about how they may not always be good for you, and i dont want my parents to find out because they think nothing's wrong with me. i always keep to myself so no one really knows how im really feeling. any suggestions?

Good Morning,

I have already read all your posts and answered some of them.  I am wondering if you have been in therapy for 2 years, how you have kept that from your family.  From your posts I feel you are still in school but it is not clear if you live at home?

You posted in the Chronic Pain Forum:

"i've been seeing this wonderful counselor for a while already"

I would like to suggest that you are  honest and upfront with your counselor and tell this person all of your feelings.  If you need to be on medication this is the person that could direct you to the right physician.

Please take care of you.

i havent been in therapy for two years-ive been feeling depression for about two years but only went to seek help about 3 months ago. i think my family can take the hint-but they ignore. the philsophy here is "ignore it and it will go away" well i believed that for a while but not anymore. i went for help, finally. i guess i will take it up further with my therapist

behindtheseeyes00987,

There are many good drugs on the market for depression.  Most people find one that will help them.  Antidepressants work by changing the level of certain chemicals in your brain called neurotransmitters. Normally, these chemicals pass signals from one brain cell to another, but in depression, some of them do not work properly.

Antidepressants often have to be taken for a long time, and it is important to come off them slowly to prevent side effects.

I use Cymbalta but there are many out there and finding the right one sometimes takes trying more than just one drug.

I hope you can find a physician that will work with you on the medication aspect of treating depression.

Gentle Hugs

Kitt

Hi there,

Anti-Depressants have a bad reputation I think because of the stigma that goes with depression. AD's are often a stepping stone for people to get the most out of their councilling. If you are going to be honest with anyone, it really needs to be your councillor... she/he cannot help you if she/he only has half a story. I would consider trying an AD and opening up to your councillor. There are loads of AD's out there and you might not get one that suits you to start with but it is worth persevering with.
